Ryan Gravenberch spielte sich in vergangenen Meister-Saison in die Stamm-Elf von Liverpool-Trainer Arne Slot (46). Dabei war ihm eigener Aussage nach ein Mann eine große Hilfe.
„Slot ist ein wirklich guter Trainer, hat ein Auge für Details“, sagte er dem niederländischen Blatt „Algemeen Dagblad“. Und: „Ich habe viel mit John Heitinga über mein Spiel gesprochen und viele Videos analysiert. Persönlich bin ich etwas enttäuscht, dass er zu Ajax geht. Aber ich denke, sie bekommen einen sehr guten Trainer.“
Co-Trainer Heitinga war Gravenberchs Mentor. Unter seiner Anleitung wandelte sich der Liverpool-Star vom Box-to-box-Spieler zu einem Mittelfeld-Strategen mit defensiverer Ausrichtung.

Heitinga zieht nach nur einem Jahr in Anfield weiter und übernimmt als neuer Cheftrainer bei Ajax Amsterdam. Ein herber Verlust für Gravenberch. Jetzt muss Slot sein Team neu aufstellen: Namen wie Etienne Reijnen, Marino Pusic und der ehemalige Liverpool-Stürmer Dirk Kuyt sind im Gespräch, um Heitinga zu ersetzen.
Gravenberch hofft, auch ohne Heitinga seine Beständigkeit beizubehalten. Seine beeindruckende Fitness war ein Schlüssel zum Erfolg der letzten Saison. Der ehemalige Bayern-Spieler bestritt 37 der Premier-League-Spiele der „Reds“, startete jedes einzelne.

Angesprochen auf die Zusammenarbeit mit Mittelfeldkollege Alexis Mac Allister meinte Gravenberch: „In der Premier League muss man viel laufen – sogar mehr als in den Niederlanden, wo es mehr um Technik geht.“ Glücklicherweise sei er schon immer gut im Laufen gewesen, und auch Mac Allister könne damit umgehen.
