The Kansas City Chiefs have been the cream of the crop in the AFC since Patrick Mahomes took over as their starting quarterback in 2018. Since then, they have made all seven AFC Championship games, winning five of them. The only teams that were able to beat them were the New England Patriots and Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals have been a particular thorn in their side, consistently giving the Chiefs arguably their toughest matchups.
Alongside the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, the Bengals have developed an intimate rivalry with the Chiefs. The Chiefs haven’t had issues eliminating the Bills and Ravens in the playoffs, though. The Bengals have even gotten them during the regular season, so a ton of eyes were on Cincinnati’s moves this offseason. They needed to do everything right in order to keep pace with Mahomes and co.

They got off to the right start, securing Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins to keep Joe Burrow happy. They used the 2025 NFL Draft to shore up their defensive front seven and the interior of the offensive line. But then the problems started. Due to the Chase and Higgins contracts, the front office found themselves short on options once All-Pro pass-rusher Trey Hendrickson began asking for a major contract extension. Now, their first round draft pick, Shemar Stewart, has left the team’s mandatory minicamp.
Shemar Stewart leaves Cincinnati Bengals mandatory minicamp due to contract dispute
Stewart’s situation is an odd one. According to him and his camp, the Bengals are trying to insert specific language into his rookie contract that they have never done before. Stewart doesn’t want to be the first one to have to deal with that, so he’s yet to sign his contract and won’t practice until he does so.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Thursday and explained that the clause Cincinnati is trying to put into the contract “is not normal”. Stewart had been with the team for the start of mandatory minicamp; he just wasn’t practicing. Now, he has left.
Meanwhile, Hendrickson is sitting at home while waiting for the contract extension he rightfully deserves. This means the Bengals don’t currently have their best pass-rusher and their first round rookie pass-rusher who would be insurance if Hendrickson isn’t on the team. It’s a terrible look for the Bengals front office, while the Chiefs, Ravens and Bills can only laugh.
