La idea de instaurar un gran Mundial de Clubes que aglutinara a los mejores equipos de cada continente y cogiera el testigo de la antigua Copa Intercontinental (UEFA vs. CONMEBOL) no es, ni mucho menos, nueva

Silvio Berlusconi, expresidente del Milan, presentó al Comité Ejecutivo de FIFA en 1993 las ‘líneas maestras’ de un torneo que terminó viendo la luz bajo la denominación de Campeonato Mundial de Clubes de la FIFA.

“La Copa Intercontinental se remonta a la época en que Europa y Sudamérica dominaban considerablemente el resto del mundo. Hoy en día, existen clubes fuertes en todos los continentes, por lo que existe la necesidad de un Campeonato Mundial de Clubes”, se justificaba el, por entonces, mandamás del fútbol mundial, Joseph Blatter.

La primera edición, programada para 1999, se terminó disputando en el año 2000. Se jugó, para ser más exactos, a mitad de temporada, entre el 5 y el 14 de enero en Brasil -los 14 partidos se jugaron entre Morumbí (Sao Paulo) y Maracaná (Río)- y contó con ocho participantes de seis Confederaciones diferentes. A los vigentes campeones de cada continente (Manchester United, Vasco da Gama, Necaxa, South Melbourne, Al Nassr y Rana Casablanca) se sumó el Real Madrid -campeón de la Champions de la temporada anterior- y el Corinthians, ganador del Brasileirao, como anfitrión.

El formato era sencillo. Constaba de una primera fase con dos grupos de cuatro equipos en la que los dos primeros -se jugaba a partido único- avanzaban directamente a la final. A los dos segundos les quedaba el consuelo de ‘jugarse el bronce’ en el partido por el tercer y cuarto puesto. 

Lo cierto es que todo parecía ‘preparado’ para presenciar una final Real Madrid-Manchester United. “Cuando vengamos tenemos que estar en La Cibeles. Vamos con toda la ilusión y nuestro deber es ganar”, señalaba Lorenzo Sanz. “Queremos ser los primeros en ganarlo”, apuntaba Sávio. “Si no vamos con humildad cavaremos nuestra tumba”, advertía Del Bosque.“Aspiramos a una final europea, pero cuidado con los brasileños”, remarcaba Fernando Hierro.

El tiempo le terminaría dando la razón. El Real Madrid derrotó a Al Nassr (3-1) con goles de Raúl, Sávio (penalti) y Anelka, que puede presumir de haber marcado el primer gol en la historia del Mundial de Clubes. Era también, curiosamente, su primer gol de blanco en partido oficial. Han pasado sólo 25 años, pero eran otros tiempos. “No sé nada de Al Nassr. Jugar contra ellos va a ser como tirar un penalti”, llegó a reconocer Vicente del Bosque en la previa.

Anelka volvió a brillar en el segundo partido ante Corinthians. El francés marcó dos grandes goles, pero falló un penalti en el 83′ que terminaría condenando a su equipo. El definitivo 2-2 obligaba al Madrid a ganar al Raja en la última jornada por un gol más de lo que lo hiciera el ‘Timao’ -jugaba más tarde- a Al Nassr.

No pudo ser. La victoria por 3-2 sobre el Raja no le valió al Real Madrid para acceder a la final. Lo peor, sin embargo, fue la imagen. Ganó gracias a un gol de Geremi en el 87′, pero terminó con ocho por las expulsiones de Roberto Carlos, Guti y Karembeu. Para colmo, perdió a Anelka por lesión.

Al Manchester United, por el otro lado del cuadro, no le iban mejor las cosas. La derrota frente a Vasco da Gama (1-3) con dos goles de Romário y otro de Edmundo le apeó de la final. Para colmo, su presidente, Martin Edwards, se vio envuelto en un escándalo sexual con una prostituta. La eliminación -acabaron terceros- disparó las críticas contra los ‘diablos rojos’, que habían renunciado a disputar la FA Cup en favor del Mundial de Clubes.

“Lo que está sucediendo con mi hijo es una vergüenza. Ya no aguanta más. Él no quiere irse de Inglaterra, pero si esto sigue así no tendrá más remedio que hacerlo”, anunciaba Ted, padre de David Beckham ante el reiterado acoso que sufría el ‘7’ del United por parte de los medios de comunicación.

El Real Madrid cerró su participación con un regusto amargo. Perdió la final de consolación contra Necaxa… por penaltis. Los fallos de McManaman y Javier Dorado (DEP) terminaron condenando a los blancos, que terminaron con jugadores nada habituales como Eto’o -marcó su penalti en la tanda- y Ognjenovic sobre el ‘verde’. 

Los 450 millones de pesetas que recibieron por ser cuartos (2,7 de euros) son ‘migajas’ comparados con los 109 millones de euros que podría llegar a cobrar el campeón de la presente edición. Entonces, como ahora, también se cuestionaba el calendario. “Es una auténtica locura. Nadie piensa en los jugadores. Teníamos muchas ganas de ser campeones, pero no ha podido ser”, admitía Raúl.

La final, brasileña, también se decidió por penaltis. El partido acabó 0-0 y los fallos de Gilberto y Edmundo desde los 11 metros para Vasco terminó coronando a Corinthians como primer ganador del Mundial de Clubes. No fue el único premio que se llevó el ‘Timao’: Dida fue designado ‘Mejor Portero’ y Edílson se llevó el ‘MVP’. Por su parte, Romário y Anelka compartieron la Bota de Oro con tres goles.

Blatter, en cambio, parecía satisfecho con el resultado: “El Mundial de Clubes es una apuesta de futuro. Creo que triunfará. El Mundial (de selecciones) también tuvo un inicio difícil en 1930 y ahora es el evento deportivo más importante del mundo”. 

Sin embargo, no cuajó. El colapso de International Sport and Leisure, socio de FIFA, provocó que la segunda edición no se llegase a celebrar… ¡¡¡cuando ya se había celebrado el sorteo!!! Iba a contar con 12 equipos -Real Madrid y Deportivo incluidos- y se iba a disputar en España en 2001. Ahora el sueño de Berlusconi vuelve a cobrar forma.
