The upcoming season is still months away, but doubts are already creeping in for Colorado Buffaloes fans. Last year, Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter made first-year offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur look good, but with their departures, analysts are questioning whether the Buffaloes can maintain their success.
Sanders and Hunter’s exit has left the team facing uncertainty. Last season, Shedeur put up impressive numbers-4,134 passing yards on 353 completions out of 477 attempts, with 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Meanwhile, Hunter earned the Heisman Trophy while playing on both sides of the ball.
While the offense thrived last year, many experts caution that its success was largely due to its pass-heavy scheme, designed to capitalize on Sanders’ arm. Now, with Shedeur in the NFL, the big question remains: Can Shurmur replicate last season’s production with a new quarterback under center?
A tough road ahead for Salter
In a discussion on the Cover 3 podcast, BuffStampede.com analyst Adam Munsterteiger voiced concerns about Shurmur’s play calling.
“After the last couple of years, you’d have to put Pat Shurmur as a question mark in terms of his play calling,” Munsterteiger said.
He added, “Let’s see if this offense can truly be balanced again. This is a big season for Pat Shurmur. We’ll finally get a clearer picture of his ability as a play caller at this level.”
Kamran Ahmad of Essentially Sports noted that Kaidon Salter, a recent transfer from the Liberty Flames, thrives in a more balanced offense thanks to his dual-threat ability. However, transitioning to a new scheme won’t be easy for Shurmur, who relied heavily on Sanders’ arm last season.
Another challenge for Salter
Beyond questions about Shurmur’s play calling, Salter faces stiff competition from freshman Julian Lewis. The four-star prospect racked up 7,212 passing yards in high school, making him a viable contender for the starting job.
While Munsterteiger and other analysts believe Salter’s experience gives him the edge, head coach Deion Sanders has a reputation for defying expectations. It wouldn’t be shocking to see Lewis step up as the starter while Salter finds himself watching from the sidelines.
