In March 2024, as is often the case in American professional sports, Canadian Brad Marchand was the last to know that he was no longer a player for the Boston Bruins in the NHL, his team in the best ice hockey league in the world for the last 16 seasons.
The trade left him in a state of shock, without an answer. So much so that the 37-year-old left winger cried at his presentation as a Panthers player. He could not contain himself. Now, 15 months after that, Marchand could become a two-time champion and is one goal away from making history in the Stanley Cup, the oldest professional competition in the United States among the four major sports: basketball, football, baseball and ice hockey.

The career of Marchand always had its ups and downs. In a franchise as traditional as the Bruins, one of the Original Six (the six founders of the championship), the Canadian’s destiny seemed to lead him to retirement at the TD Garden. Boston, which is the franchise that has lost the most Stanley Cups in history (14), does not despise its heroes.
A champion in 2011, in his third season with the team, he was established in the team’s rotation, where he was one of the great veterans. But negotiations over his renewal became bogged down and the Bruins saw an opportunity to renew the team by getting a second-round pick in the 2027 draft. His arrival in Florida revolutionized the Panthers attack, who in 2024 won the Stanley Cup (4-3) against the Oilers, the very team they are battling for the title this season. Marchand seems blessed in this final playoff. “I’m not able to fully appreciate the little things and valuable things that Marchand can do. A lot of his skills excite the fans, but what he does in small spaces under tremendous pressure is world class,” said Paul Maurice, the Panthers’ coach.
Florida, who did not have home advantage, dominate the series (3-2) after winning away to the Oilers with two goals from Marchand. And they could be champions on Tuesday if they win one more game at home. Since 2021 (Tampa Bay Lightning) a team has not won back-to-back titles. But the Canadian’s feat goes further. He has six goals in this Stanley Cup, something that has not happened since 1988 with Esa Tikkanen, an Oilers player. If he scores one more goal, he will equal Wayne Gretzky’s all-time record of seven, which dates back to 1985. He is already the active player with the most goals in a Stanley Cup (13) and the second (after Mario Lemieux) to score five goals with two different teams in the last 59 years. From outcast to hero.
