It is not known for certain when the American will retire, but what LeBron James has resolved is his future with the national team. In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, he confirmed that he will not be present at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. “Nothing has changed. If I had to look at it under a microscope, I’d say I’ll be able to support Team USA for the rest of my life, that’s for sure. But I don’t see myself playing. I’ve given everything I have and I’ll always be grateful, loyal and dedicated to Team USA,” he said.
LeBron’s career in Team USA
His Olympic debut came at Athens 2004, when he was just 19 years old and had completed his first season in the NBA. That tournament ended with a disappointing bronze medal. After that experience, LeBron returned to the national team to play in the 2007 FIBA Americas Championship, a qualifying tournament for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
At the 2008 Olympic Games, LeBron was one of the key players in the team led by Mike Krzyzewski, sharing the spotlight with other stars such as Kobe Bryant, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony. The team played at a very high level throughout the tournament and was crowned Olympic champion after an exciting final against Spain.
Four years later, at London 2012, LeBron reaffirmed his status as one of Team USA’s most influential leaders. In that tournament, the United States again met Spain in the final and again took gold.
After 2012, LeBron decided not to participate in any more international tournaments. He missed the FIBA World Cup in 2014 and turned down invitations for the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2021 Olympics. His last participation was in the last Olympic Games in Paris, where he won his third gold medal and the fifth consecutive (since 2008) for the United States in men’s basketball
