In just one season, quarterback Cam Ward transformed the Miami Hurricanes’ offense, setting a new standard for excellence and leaving a legacy that future quarterbacks, like Dereon Coleman, aspire to emulate.
Ward’s journey from a zero-star recruit at Incarnate Word to the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft is a testament to his resilience and skill.

At Miami, he shattered records, throwing for 4,313 yards and 39 touchdowns, earning accolades such as the ACC Player of the Year and the Davey O’Brien Award. His leadership and performance have set a high bar for those who follow.
Coleman, a 4-star recruit from Jones High School in Orlando, committed to Miami in July 2024. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 160 pounds, he has demonstrated exceptional athleticism and leadership on the field.
In his sophomore year, he led Jones High to a 10-4 record and a deep playoff run, completing 63.4% of his passes for 2,236 yards and 16 touchdowns, while also rushing for 247 yards and four scores. Coleman’s commitment to Miami was a significant win for the Hurricanes, as he chose them over other notable programs.
During the Elite 11 finals in California, Coleman shared insights into his journey, stating, “I think my journey’s been rocky. My journey was never clean.
“I always had adversity in everything I did, so I just had to overcome all that.” This resilience mirrors Ward’s own path, highlighting a shared determination to succeed despite challenges.
When asked about Ward’s influence, Coleman recalled, “He said the same thing. What I say is, ‘Don’t let them tell you what you can or can’t do.’
Because he came from way below than what I am. So that actually hits my heart when he says it, too. So, I just know I can do what I want to do if I put my heart to it.” These words reflect the mentorship and inspiration Ward provides to the next generation of quarterbacks.
The future of Miami football: Coleman’s vision
As Ward transitions to the NFL, the quarterback position at Miami is poised for a new era. Coleman is set to step into this role, bringing with him a blend of skill, determination, and a commitment to excellence.
His vision for the future is clear: “Imagine me being there for 3-4 years. That says it all. We are going to go win a national championship.”
With Ward’s legacy as a foundation, Coleman is ready to lead the Hurricanes into a new chapter, aiming to build upon the success of his predecessor and achieve even greater heights.
As the Miami Hurricanes look ahead, the shadow of Cam Ward looms large, but with it comes the promise of a bright future under the leadership of Dereon Coleman.
