The NFL might have cooled on running backs for a while, but that freeze seems to be thawing fast. Just askAshton Jeanty, who went No. 6 overall to the Raiders this past spring. In a class stacked with quarterback talent, Jeanty’s name still rang out loud-and for good reason.
With the 2025 NFL Draft in the rearview, the search is already underway for the next backfield star. And as far as early contenders go, Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love is already near the top of every scout’s list. He’s explosive, elusive, and coming off a huge season that ended just short of a national title.

Still, is he really that guy? Is he next in the line of backs so good they force front offices to rethink their entire draft philosophy?
Not so fast, say some analysts.
NFL writer Doug Farrar didn’t hesitate to praise Jeanty as “generational”-a word he admits he rarely uses. “I think Jeremiyah Love will be a great back in the NFL,” Farrar told Best Podcast Available. “But he’s not Ashton Jeanty. And that’s not a slam on Love. Jeanty just plays in a different stratosphere.”
Jeanty, after all, bulldozed his way to over 1,800 rushing yards and 21 touchdowns last season, according to Pro Football Focus, often doing it against stacked boxes. He finished second in Heisman voting and even drew comparisons to Bijan Robinson from Robinson himself during Super Bowl week.
Notre Dame’s New Star Is on the Rise-But Can He Break Into Elite Company?
Love doesn’t have Jeanty’s freakish numbers, but what he does have is big-play speed, patience, and a growing resume. After splitting carries early on, Love found his rhythm in the second half of the season, finishing with 1,276 yards and 14 touchdowns. ESPN’s Todd McShay already has him as the top running back in the 2026 draft class.
If he takes full control of the backfield this fall-and Notre Dame continues to contend-it’s not hard to imagine the conversation shifting. He may not be the next Jeanty. But he might not have to be.
