MLB roundup: Mets hit 7 HRs vs. Phils, halt 7-game skid

Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo and Juan Soto hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the third inning Saturday night for the New York Mets, who snapped a seven-game losing streak with an 11-4 win over the host Philadelphia Phillies in the middle game of a three-game series.

The Mets moved into a tie for first place in the National League East with the Phillies, who had a three-game winning streak stopped as they lost for just the third time in 12 games.

Nimmo and Soto had two homers apiece for the Mets, who hit seven round-trippers — all solo shots. The seven homers were one shy of the franchise record set in a 16-7 win over Philadelphia on Aug. 24, 2015.

The consecutive homers by Lindor, Nimmo and Soto off rookie Mick Abel (2-1) put the Mets ahead for good and marked the 10th time in team history a trio of players have gone back-to-back-to-back.

Giants 3, Red Sox 2

Rafael Devers hit his first home run for his new team against his former team and Landen Roupp combined with three relievers on a six-hitter as San Francisco held on to beat visiting Boston.

Acquired last Sunday from the Red Sox, Devers had gone 3-for-17 as a Giant before launching his 16th home run of the season — his first in a San Francisco uniform — to left field against Brayan Bello (3-2) in the third. Heliot Ramos also took Bello deep, a solo shot in the first. Roupp (5-5) limited Boston to three singles over six innings, striking out seven.

Trevor Story went 3-for-4 for the Red Sox, who fell to 3-2 on their nine-game western swing. They avoided a shutout in the ninth, scoring a pair of runs against Giants reliever Camilo Doval. But with the potential tying run in scoring position, Doval retired Marcelo Mayer and Romy Gonzalez on ground balls to wrap up his 12th save.

Yankees 9, Orioles 0

Four home runs backed up New York’s second one-hitter of the year in a rout of Baltimore. Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt (4-3) threw seven hitless innings.

Ben Rice, Trent Grisham, Anthony Volpe and J.C. Escarra all hit solo shots in a 14-hit effort for the Yankees. This marks the third consecutive double-digit hit showing for New York. Volpe recorded three hits, tying for a team-high, after going hitless in his previous 25 at-bats.

Orioles starter Zach Eflin (6-4) only managed three innings and surrendered 6 earned runs on 10 hits. Despite the decisive loss, Baltimore is still 6-3 in its last nine games.

Rays 8, Tigers 3

Taylor Walls’ two-run single highlighted a four-run first inning as Tampa Bay toppled visiting Detroit.

Danny Jansen, Junior Caminero and Christopher Morel each hit solo homers for the Rays, while Yandy Diaz extended his hitting streak to 12 games in a 2-for-4 outing. In winning his second consecutive impressive start, Ryan Pepiot (5-6) yielded only one run on three hits in five innings, striking out seven.

Jake Rogers (groundout), Jahmai Jones (double) and Dillon Dingler (sacrifice fly) drove in runs for the Tigers. Opener Brant Hurter (2-3) surrendered four unearned runs in two-thirds of the first inning before yielding to Sawyer Gipson-Long for 6 1/3 innings (four runs, six hits).

Brewers 9, Twins 0

Isaac Collins went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Milwaukee pulled away for a big win over host Minnesota.

Brice Turang and Sal Frelick also doubled and drove in a run apiece for Milwaukee, which beat the Twins for the second straight day and will go for a three-game sweep on Sunday. Christian Yelich followed up on his eight-RBI performance in the series opener by going 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Carlos Correa doubled for Minnesota’s only extra-base hit as Jose Quintana earned the shutout win. The Twins have lost eight of nine games.

Padres 5, Royals 2

Fernando Tatis Jr. broke open a close game with a three-run homer and San Diego evened its weekend series vs. visiting Kansas City.

Tatis broke a streak of 101 plate appearances without a homer, dating back to May 27, by lining a Taylor Clarke fastball an estimated 380 feet into the seats in left-center field with two outs in the seventh. His 14th homer of the season scored Jose Iglesias and Bryce Johnson.

Dylan Cease (3-6) picked up the win, allowing just three hits and a run in 6 2/3 innings, with three walks and four strikeouts. Noah Cameron (2-3) absorbed the loss, permitting two runs on five hits and three walks in 5 1/3 innings while whiffing two.

Cardinals 6, Reds 5 (11 innings)

Yohel Pozo’s RBI single drove in the game-winner at St. Louis pulled off an extra-innings victory over visiting Cincinnati.

Pozo’s two-out hit drove in Jordan Walker for the Cardinals, who have won five straight. Starter Sonny Gray gave up one run on five hits and struck out five in five innings. Nolan Arenado tied the game at 5 in the ninth with a solo home run. Reliever Phil Maton tossed a scoreless top of the 11th for the win.

The Reds, who used eight pitchers in a bullpen game, have lost three straight. Elly De La Cruz hit his 17th home run of the season, a 435-foot blast over the center field wall.

Cubs 10, Mariners 7

Ian Happ smacked two of Chicago’s five home runs in an early-inning offensive outburst to defeat Seattle.

The Cubs took a 9-1 lead after just three innings. Happ hit a leadoff solo shot in the first, followed by a Kyle Tucker solo homer the following at-bat. Chicago hit a pair of three-run homers in the second and third, with the first by Happ and the second from Michael Busch.

Seattle began to rally in the middle innings, scoring five runs in the fourth and the fifth to narrow the lead to 9-6. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his 21st home run of the year to push Chicago to double-digit runs in the seventh. Cal Raleigh extended his major-league home run lead with his 30th of the year.

Angels 9, Astros 1

Logan O’Hoppe hit two home runs and drove in four runs and Luis Rengifo also homered as Los Angeles hammered Houston in Anaheim, Calif.

It was the fourth multi-homer game of O’Hoppe’s career and the second this season. Zach Neto doubled twice and scored a run, Nolan Schanuel went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Taylor Ward doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs for Los Angeles, which snapped a two-game skid.

Jose Soriano (5-5) picked up the win after allowing one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out 10 — the second time in three starts he hit double-digits in strikeouts.

Nationals 7, Dodgers 3

Nathaniel Lowe hit two home runs, James Wood and Luis Garcia Jr. hit back-to-back long balls in the fourth inning, and Washington turned five total homers into a win over host Los Angeles.

CJ Abrams added a home run for the second consecutive night as the Nationals won for just the second time in their last 14 games. Right-hander Jake Irvin (6-3) gave up two runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, with no walks and seven strikeouts.

Andy Pages, Will Smith and Teoscar Hernandez hit home runs for the Dodgers, who lost for the second time in eight games and dropped to 2-3 against the Nationals this season. Right-hander Dustin May (4-5) gave up three home runs, all solo shots, in six innings for Los Angeles.

Blue Jays 7, White Sox 1

Jose Berrios pitched into the eighth inning, Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered as Toronto defeated visiting Chicago.

Berrios (3-3) allowed one unearned run on two hits and three walks in 7 2/3 innings. Davis Schnieder had two hits and three RBIs and Nathan Lukes had two hits and an RBI as the Blue Jays split the first two games of the three-game series. Chad Green pitched a perfect ninth.

Miguel Vargas scored the White Sox’s lone run, hitting a triple with one out in the sixth and scoring with a smart slide when Guerrero’s errant throw home on Andrew Benintendi’s grounder to first took catcher Alejandro Kirk up the third-base line. Chicago starter Aaron Civale allowed five runs in seven innings.

Rangers 3, Pirates 2

Texas managed just four hits, but it made the most of them as the Rangers earned a road win over Pittsburgh. Corey Seager hit the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning.

Kumar Rocker (3-4) gave up all five Pirates hits as he teamed with three relievers to give Pittsburgh its sixth loss in its last seven games. The two-time first-round draft pick threw 5 1/3 innings giving up two runs, five hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Pirates starter Mitch Keller (1-10) saw his hard luck season continue. He allowed just a hit, a walk and an unearned run through his first five innings before the Rangers scored twice on him in the sixth.

Braves 7, Marlins 0

Rookie Drake Baldwin had two hits, including a three-run home run, and Grant Holmes threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings to help Atlanta shut out host Miami.

Holmes (4-6) allowed five hits, walked five and struck out five for the Braves, who have won eight of 11 following a seven-game losing streak to begin June. Ronald Acuna Jr. and Marcell Ozuna each tallied a pair of hits and an RBI as Atlanta evened the three-game series.

The Marlins’ Eury Perez (0-2) allowed three runs on four hits across 4 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking two in his third start of the season. Eric Wagaman and Jesus Sanchez each recorded a double for Miami, which has lost three of four.

Diamondbacks 5, Rockies 3

Eugenio Suarez homered for the third straight game, Ketel Marte had four hits and Arizona beat Colorado in Denver.

Suarez drove in two runs and leads the majors with 67 RBIs. Geraldo Perdomo also went deep and added a single for Arizona, which has won three straight. D-backs starter Merrill Kelly (7-3) gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings. After allowing a leadoff hit, Shelby Miller struck out three in the ninth for his eighth save.

Jordan Beck hit a two-run homer and Tyler Freeman had two hits for Colorado, which has lost three in a row following a season-high four-game winning streak. Jimmy Herget (0-1) yielded two runs on three hits in two innings in relief.

Guardians 4, Athletics 2

Luis Ortiz matched his career high of 10 strikeouts and Jose Ramirez and Steven Kwan each had three hits and one RBI to lead Cleveland to a victory over the Athletics at West Sacramento, Calif.

Ortiz (4-8) allowed two hits and two walks over six shutout innings to win for just the second time in his past eight decisions. One of Ramirez’s hits was a run-scoring single in the second inning for his 900th career RBI. Emmanuel Clase worked a perfect ninth inning for his 17th save.

Luis Urias had two hits for the Athletics, who struck out 13 times and lost for just the third time in the past nine games. Mitch Spence (2-2) of the A’s gave up four runs and eight hits over 4 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked one.
