On the eve of “Flagg Day,” where the Dallas Mavericks are set to select Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Kyrie Irving has made a bold statement of loyalty and long-term vision. The nine-time All-Star has declined his $43 million player option to instead sign a three-year, $119 million contract extension, according to ESPN’sShams Charania.
The new deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, ensuring Irving remains with the team through his prime physical and mental years. This move not only signals a deep commitment to the franchise but also represents a strategic partnership aimed at stability, identity, and most importantly, immediate results.
Irving’s decision also allows the Mavericks’ front office to access a $5.7 million mid-level exception, a key financial tool to bolster the roster while they await Kyrie’s return-projected for January 2026-following his recovery from a torn ACL.
Becomes the heart of Dallas
Despite missing most of last season due to injury, Kyrie’s impact in Dallas has been undeniable. Before going down on March 3 against Sacramento, Irving was posting All-Star numbers: 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, while shooting 47.3% from the field and 40.1% from three. His performance earned him a ninth All-Star nod, but it was his leadership off the court that truly set him apart.
