In a dramatic turn of events, Brian Johnson, better known as the “Liver King,” finds himself at the centre of a police investigation in Austin, Texas.
The fitness influencer has been charged with making a terroristic threat after issuing a public challenge to UFC commentator and podcaster Joe Rogan.
This marks a significant escalation in their ongoing public feud.
Johnson is famous for his socalled “ancestral lifestyle,” which includes consuming raw animal organs and promoting intense, primal fitness habits.
Yet in 2022, his reputation took a hit when leaked emails revealed he was spending $11,000 monthly on steroids and growth hormones, a claim he later admitted in a public apology. Now, his controversial brand has taken another dark turn.
The trouble began when Johnson uploaded one or more Instagram videos with questions that quickly grabbed attention. In one clip, he appeared donning a wolf pelt and declared:
“Joe Rogan, I’m calling you out, my name’s Liver King. Man to man, I’m picking a fight with you. I have no training in jiujitsu, you’re a black belt, you should dismantle me. But I’m picking a fight with you. Your rules, I’ll come to you, whenever you’re ready.”
In a followup message, Johnson said:
“[I’m] willing to die, hoping that you’ll choke me out because that’s a dream come true.”
These posts prompted swift reaction from the Austin Police Department. Detectives confirmed they identified the videos, established Johnson was travelling to Austin, and reached out to Rogan, who told them he had never interacted with Johnson but considered the threats alarming.
Late on June 24, around 5:59 p.m., police arrested Johnson without incident at the Four Seasons Hotel on San Jacinto Boulevard.
He was booked into Travis County Jail, charged with a Class B misdemeanor terroristic threat, and held on a $20,000 bond. He was shortly released on Wednesday, June 25, on that bond.
Investigation details and past tensions
This confrontation marks just the latest development in a public dispute between the two men. Rogan had previously criticised Johnson’s raw diet and called into question the authenticity of his physique. On his podcast in 2022, Rogan bluntly stated:
“No, that’s a gimmick, that guy. He’s got an a- filled with steroids… That’s not a natural body.”
Johnson, in turn, has built his brand around an image of pure ancestral living, but the steroid scandal severely undermined that narrative and led to multiple classaction lawsuits over deceptive marketing.
Following Johnson‘s Wednesday release, conditions for his release reportedly include staying at least 200 yards away from Rogan and his family, surrendering any firearms, and undergoing a mental health evaluation within seven days.
The investigation remains active, and authorities have not disclosed further details.
