Einen großen Traum will er sich noch erfüllen, dann ist Schluss!
Basketball-Profi Robin Benzing (36) hat seinen Abschied von der Basketball-Bühne angekündigt. Der ehemalige Kapitän der deutschen Nationalmannschaft verlängerte seinen Vertrag bei Zweitligist Gießen 46ers nochmal um ein Jahr bis 2026. Dann will er am Ende der kommenden Saison den Ruhestand einläuten.

Bevor es so weit ist, hat er noch einiges vor: „Ich möchte mit den 46ers kommende Saison in die BBL aufsteigen, das ist mein ganz großes Ziel für meine letzte Saison. Dafür werde ich alles geben, auf dem Parkett und auch außerhalb.“ Er wird die Mittelhessen, für die er seit 2023 aufläuft, ein weiteres Jahr als Kapitän aufs Parkett führen.
In der Gießener „Osthölle“ habe er sich in den vergangenen zwei Jahren „sehr wohl gefühlt“, so der 2,10 Meter große Power-Forward. „Die Fans haben mich in ihr Herz geschlossen. Sie haben mir stets Respekt und Liebe entgegengebracht. Ich freue mich, ihnen noch ein paar Monate lang etwas zurückgeben zu können.“

Mit Benzing geht nächstes Jahr ein Großer des deutschen Basketballs. Der gebürtige Hesse absolvierte 167 Länderspiele, nahm an fünf Europameisterschaften (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015 und 2017), zwei Weltmeisterschaften (2010 und 2019) sowie Olympia 2021 in Tokio teil. Bei der EM 2017 war er Kapitän der DBB-Auswahl, die er ins Viertelfinale führte.

In der Easycredit Basketball-Bundesliga lief er für Ratiopharm Ulm (2009-11), Bayern München (2011-15), wo er 2014 die Meisterschaft feierte, und die Würzburg Baskets (2017/18) auf. Im Ausland war er zweimal für Saragossa aktiv (2015-17 und 2019-21), spielte in der Türkei (Besiktas 18/19), Italien (Bologna 21/22) und sogar ein Jahr in Uruguay (Atletico Penarol 21/22).
[–>Auf die Zeit nach der Karriere hat er sich schon vorbereitet. Seit diesem Jahr fungiert er als Co-Trainer der deutschen U20-Nationalmannschaft.
