Angekündigt, aber trotzdem kurios und sicherlich ein einmaliger Vorgang bei einer Junioren-WM, die beiden deutschen Spieler Felix Göttler (19/Essen) und Fritz Haake (20/Dessau) reisen vorzeitig ab und während ihre Kollegen um Platz 5 bei der WM kämpfen, machen sie sich zeitgleich in Essen für das umstrittene Zweitliga-Wiederholungsspiel warm.
Bundestrainer Martin Heuberger (61) geht so nur mit 14 Spielern statt 16 in die Partie gegen Ägypten.

In der ersten Hälfte läuft gar nichts zusammen. Der Heuberger-Mannschaft fehlt das Zielwasser. Das Team leistet sich gleich zwölf Fehlwürfe, läuft 12-mal umsonst auf das ägyptische Tor zu und wirft dabei auch noch Torhüter Youssef Salama (14 Paraden) berühmt. Der wird am Ende der Partie sogar als Spieler des Spiels ausgezeichnet.

Die zweite Hälfte beginnt genau andersherum. Dieses Mal haben die Ägypter Ladehemmung, treffen nach der Pause 10 Minuten das Tor nicht. So holt Deutschland den Rückstand (11:15) auf und kann auf 15:15 stellen. Endlich hat der DHB-Nachwuchs Betriebstemperatur erreicht. Nach 45 Minuten führen die Deutschen 20:19.

Wir haben nur eine Niederlage in diesem Turnier gegen Schweden gehabt, aber die hat uns leider die Medaille gekostet.“
Übrigens: U21-Weltmeister wurde Dänemark nach einem 29:26 im Finale gegen Portugal.
