Aldrich Potgieter ganó el domingo por la noche el Rocket Classic. Es sudafricano, tiene 20 años y su trayectoria es claramente ascendente, aunque todavía le falte algo de consistencia. Son ya varias las semanas que ha estado en la pelea por ganar torneos de élite y su nombre ya forma parte de la reducida lista de jugadores que han ganado en el PGA Tour antes de cumplir los 21 años y que no son estadounidenses: Seve Ballesteros, Rory McIlroy, Joaquín Niemann, Tom Kim y ahora también Aldrich Potgieter.
El joven talento requirió de 77 hoyos para vencer en Detroit. Compitió en un playoff con Max Greyserman y Chris Kirk, llegando al quinto hoyo con el primero. El sudafricano embocó desde cinco metros para obtener su primer triunfo en las grandes ligas. Ganó el golfista más joven de todo el circuito. De hecho, Potgieter fue el vencedor más joven en la historia del Korn Ferry Tour; también un amateur de éxito –ganó el Brtish, entre otros torneos importantes- y además es hoy por hoy el número 1 en distancia con el driver en el PGA (alcanzó los 316 km/h con el driver en las manos).

Esta temporada había optado a cinco triunfos, llegando al domingo con opciones, clasificado entre los cinco primeros. No pudo certificar victorias y la cuarta ronda se convirtieron en su muro. Esta vez empezó la jornada con dos de ventaja y la jornada se alargó más de lo que hubiera deseado. El sudafricano incluso admitió que le vino bien perder la primera posición en el séptimo hoyo: “Hubo un cambio que se activó cuando perdí el liderato. Sentí que podía perseguir algo. Tuve que salir de las sensaciones que tenía en esos primeros hoyos y entrar en ese modo de persecución que me permitiera jugar un golf diferente”, confesó.
