The Cleveland Browns are embroiled in one of the fiercest competitions for the starting quarterback position in the NFL, and while the future could be promising with names like Shedeur Sanders or Dillon Gabriel in the mix, not having a defined offensive leader can sometimes bring collateral damage that no organization wants to deal with during the season.
Shedeur Sanders gets uneasy over a sensitive topic
This situation could worsen if rumors start to surface that the team might target another quarterback in the next NFL Draft, as is happening now.
The Cleveland Browns might go for another quarterback
While Joe Flacco or Kenny Pickett are gaining traction to take the snaps in Week 1, the future of Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel is at risk within the Browns if the team opts to select another player for the position. In that case, the historic college seasons of both players would be left in the past, and another star would emerge to take their place as the franchise’s great hope.
Ryan McCrystal of Sharp Football Analysis projects that this could happen, naming Penn State QB Drew Allar as the No. 1 pick for the Browns in the next NFL Draft.
And for Mike Moraitis of Sporting News, this is a “realistic” scenario.
“The intriguing thing is, Allar, who has good but not great athleticism to go along with his immense arm talent, didn’t have a great allotment of weapons around him, yet he was still able to post those numbers and help take Penn State deep into the College Football Playoff,” Moraitis wrote.
“As a result, it’s safe to say Allar hasn’t hit his ceiling yet and could be even better with a superior supporting cast.
“There’s still a long way to go between now and the 2026 NFL Draft, but if Allar can build on what he did last season in 2025, he could be the first signal-caller selected – and the Browns are a very realistic landing spot for him if they stink it up like many expect them to.”
It’s premature to assume Cleveland has this plan, considering they haven’t played a single game this season. Or that the outlook will be so dire compared to other teams that will also face their own challenges.
What’s certain is that so much mystery or uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position isn’t helping, and we could even consider this scenario because, within the franchise, Kevin Stefanski or the organization as a whole isn’t fully convinced about committing to the players they currently have.
To find out, we’ll have to wait…
