Ratiopharm Ulm hatte die Hand schon fast am Meisterpokal. Doch dann holte sich der FC Bayern Basketball in Spiel fünf der BBL-Finalserie durch ein 81:77 doch noch den Titel.
Für die Ulmer beginnt nach einer überragenden Saison nun der Neuaufbau. Die Supertalente Noa Essengue (18) und Ben Saraf (19) wurden beim NBA-Draft gezogen. MVP-Kandidat Karim Jallow (28) wird wohl bei einem Euroleague-Team unterschreiben. Und „Big“ Philipp Herkenhoff (25) zog es zurück zu seinem Ex-Klub Rasta Vechta.
Der Ersatz für Herkenhoff macht jedoch deutlich, dass Bayern-Jäger Ulm auch kommende Saison nicht locker lässt. Denn es ist Nationalspieler Christian „Chris“ Sengfelder (30)!
[–>Sportchef Thorsten Leibenath (50) hatte sich seit 2019 mehrfach bemüht, den Power Forward zu verpflichten. Diesmal klappte es (Vertrag bis 2027). Sehr zur Freude von Leibenath: „Chris ist ein vorbildlicher Profi, der es versteht, in bester Weise seine Leistungen mannschaftsdienlich einzubringen.“ Daneben soll der 35-malige Nationalspieler der jungen Mannschaft Halt und Führung bieten.
Vor einem Jahr hatte Sengfelder nach einem schwierigen Jahr in Bonn dort seinen Vertrag aufgelöst und war zu Champions-League-Vertreter Jeanne d’Arc Dijon Bourgogne nach Frankreich gewechselt. Jetzt kehrt er in die BBL zurück. Und strahlt: „Ulm war mein absoluter Wunschverein, weil er für mich alles kombiniert, was wichtig ist: sportliche Ambitionen, individuelle Weiterentwicklung, tolle Fans und Nähe zu meiner Familie.“
Offiziell bestätigt ist jetzt auch der Wechsel von Len Schoormann (23). Der vielseitige Guard von den EWE Baskets Oldenburg hat trotz seines jungen Alters schon 161 Erstliga-Einsätze vorzuweisen und unterschrieb ebenfalls gleich für zwei Jahre.

Bamberger Königstransfer hat die Haare schön
Rot gefärbte Dreadlocks sind seit knapp zehn Jahren das Markenzeichen von Cobe Williams (24/USA). Was einen neuen Klub angeht, war der Aufbauspieler damit farblich schon mal festgelegt. Und entschied sich am Ende für die BMA365 Bamberg Baskets!
Der Texaner mit den blitzschnellen Füßen soll im Team von Trainer Anton Gavel (40) kommende Saison die Offensive leiten – und den Traditionsklub zurück in die Play-offs führen.
„Mit Cobe haben wir einen Spieler gefunden, der unser Leader und der verlängerte Arm von uns Trainern auf dem Spielfeld sein wird und die Mannschaft auf beiden Seiten des Spielfeldes anführen soll“, beschreibt Gavel den nur 1,83 Meter „großen“ Floor-General. „Durch seine Geschwindigkeit kann er auch für andere Spieler Räume öffnen, um sie hier dann auch zu finden und unser Team dann auch in schwierigen Situationen auf seinen Schultern tragen kann. Auch in der Verteidigung ist er ein Spieler, der es versteht, seine Gegenspieler zu beschäftigen.“
Die abgelaufene Saison verbrachte Williams bei Spirou Basket Charleroi in Belgien sowie am Ende beim polnischen Erstligisten MKS Dabrowa Gornicza. Durchsetzungsvermögen lernte er schon als Kind mit sechs Geschwistern. In der BBL will er nun den nächsten Entwicklungsschritt machen: „Im nächsten Jahr geht es darum, Grenzen zu überschreiten, Herausforderungen anzunehmen und gemeinsam mit der Stadt im Rücken nach Größerem zu streben.“
Büffelherde aus dem NFL-Camp verstärkt Jena
Nazihar „Naz“ Bohannon (26) stammt aus dem sogenannten „Rust Belt“ der USA. Eine Malocher-Gegend, mehr Blaumann als Designer-Anzug. Und genauso spielt der Zugang von Aufsteiger Science City Jena auch Basketball. Der Power Forward (1,98 Meter, 103 Kilo) mit dem Spitznamen „Ein-Mann-Büffelherde“ kommt von Zweitligist Phoenix Hagen und unterschrieb zunächst für eine Spielzeit.
„Ich bin ein Spieler, der sich schon lange nach einer Chance in der ersten Liga gesehnt hat und nun dankbar ist, dass mir Science City diese Chance geben wird“, sagt Bohannon, der mit zehn (!) Geschwistern aufwuchs. „Mein Ziel ist es, mit Jena in der BBL konkurrenzfähig zu spielen und um die Play-offs zu kämpfen.“
Interessant: Vor drei Jahren lud ihn das NFL-Team der Jacksonville Jaguars nach Ende seiner College-Spielzeit bei Clemson ins Mini-Camp ein. Und das, obwohl er zuvor fünf Jahre nicht mehr Football gespielt hatte! Bohannon packte in kurzer Zeit zehn Kilo Masse drauf – wurde aber kurz vor Saisonstart wieder entlassen …

Arbeitstier steigt eine Liga auf
Mehr Tiefe auf den deutschen Positionen soll „Big Man“ Melvin Jostmann (24) den Telekom Baskets Bonn verleihen. Trainer Marko Stankovic (41) beobachtete seine Entwicklung in den letzten Jahren schon in der zweiten Liga. Jetzt betrachtete man den kampf- und reboundstarken Paderborner auf dem Hardtberg als bereit für die Bundesliga. Und kauften ihn für eine fünfstellige Summe aus seinem Vertrag bei ProA-Team PS Karlsruhe Lions heraus. Stankovic: „In diesem Sommer war der Moment gekommen, ihm eine Chance in der BBL zu geben.“
In Karlsruhe galt der 2,01 Meter große Athlet (106 Kilo) als Arbeitstier. Zu seinem Aufstieg sagt Jostmann: „Bonn gibt mir die Chance, mich auf Bundesliga-Niveau zu beweisen, daher ist der Wechsel zu den Baskets der richtige Schritt in meiner Karriere.“
Europareise beginnt in Frankfurt
Der erste neue Importspieler der Frankfurt Skyliners ist ebenfalls ein „Big“. Jaedon LeDee (25). Nach einem Jahr im NBA-Unterbau, der G-League, bei den Salt Lake City Stars verlässt das Kraftpaket (2,01 Meter, 110 Kilo) zum ersten Mal die Vereinigten Staaten.
Sebastian Gleim (ab 1. August Geschäftsführer Sport der Skyliners): „Jaedon wird mit seiner Qualität und Präsenz einen positiven Einfluss an beiden Enden des Feldes haben. Wir freuen uns, dass die Verpflichtung mit Jae geklappt hat!“
