Er sagt zu SPORT BILD: „Wir hatten eine Saison mit 48 Pflichtspielen und am Ende kam es auf eine Partie, auf eine Aktion an. Nach dem Elversberg-Spiel habe ich einige Wochen gebraucht, bis die Anspannung wirklich weg war. Eigentlich ist das erst seit Mitte Juni wieder der Fall.“

Und er gibt zu: „Ich bin hin und wieder nachts aufgewacht, weil ich geträumt habe, dass wir es doch nicht geschafft haben.“ Doch die Rettung war echt – und Sanwald sowie Trainer Frank Schmidt (51) dürfen wieder als Bundesligist planen. Mit Offensiv-Mann Arijon Ibrahimovic (19), der leihweise von den Bayern kommt, ist der erste Zugang fix.
Zwei Jahre nach dem erstmaligen Aufstieg und ein Jahr nach der sensationellen Qualifikation für den Europapokal herrscht auch nach der Zitter-Saison Aufbruchsstimmung in Heidenheim. „Die Euphorie der Last-Minute-Rettung ist jetzt noch da und sie ist größer als beim Aufstieg“, findet der Vorstandsvorsitzende: „Unsere Fans, unser Umfeld und der ganze Verein – wir alle haben eine große Vorfreude auf die neue Saison.“

Denn der Klassenerhalt – trotz zwischenzeitlich Platz 18 – zeigte, dass sich in Heidenheim alle aufeinander verlassen können. Sanwald: „Die Basis war immer unser Zusammenhalt. Der Wind kam noch nie so stark von vorne wie in der vergangenen Saison. Wir sind unglaublich stolz, dass wir es trotz Umbruch und Dreifach-Belastung geschafft haben.“
Die Konkurrenz ist durch den Aufstieg der Traditionsklubs Köln und HSV jetzt noch größer. Sanwald erklärt: „Für viele waren wir Absteiger Nummer 1 – und werden es auch zur neuen Saison wieder sein. Für uns kann es wieder nur ein Ziel geben. Und zwar den erneuten Klassenerhalt.“
