Sophie Cunningham, Guard der Indiana Fever, hat sich am Donnerstag öffentlich für ihre umstrittene Aussagen über einige der neuen Standorte der US-Profiliga WNBA entschuldigt. Die 28-Jährige hatte Anfang der Woche Zweifel geäußert, wie begeistert Menschen wirklich sind, Spiele in Detroit oder Cleveland zu sehen – Städte, die die Liga gerade als neue Standorte bestätigt hat. Cunningham sagte: „Ich weiß nicht, wie aufregend es für Leute wirklich ist, nach Detroit oder Cleveland zu gehen.“
Stattdessen nannte sie Städte wie Miami, Nashville oder Kansas City als attraktivere Alternativen: „Miami wäre großartig gewesen. Nashville ist eine fantastische Stadt. Kansas City – eine tolle Chance.“
Die WNBA hatte Anfang der Woche angekündigt, drei neue Teams in Detroit, Cleveland und Philadelphia zu etablieren. In diesem Zusammenhang hinterfragte Cunningham die Entscheidung der Liga und betonte, dass man die Meinung der Spielerinnen stärker berücksichtigen müsse: „Man will wissen, wo wir gerne spielen. Wo wir Spaß haben. Wo wir Fans in die Halle bringen.“

„Ich bin selbst in Columbia im Bundesstaat Missouri aufgewachsen – das ist keine Metropole“, so die Basketballerin, die zuvor sechs Jahre für Phoenix spielte. „Es ging mir mehr um den Lifestyle, das Drumherum abseits des Courts. Ich denke, es wäre spannend, auch Teams außerhalb klassischer NBA-Märkte zu haben.“
Sie betonte: „Ich würde niemals schlecht über Mittelklasse- oder Arbeiterstädte sprechen.“
Die Liga hatte bei der Expansion zahlreiche Städte in Erwägung gezogen – darunter Miami, Nashville, Kansas City, St. Louis, Charlotte und Denver.
