Amon-Ra St. Brown has long been known for his intensity, meticulous preparation, and memory for perceived slights and a most recently one came at the hand of his girlfriend, who messed up his preferred jersey number.
The Detroit Lions wide receiver maintains a list of all wide receivers drafted ahead of him in 2021 as motivation, showing just how keen he is to use those who overlooked him in his quest to improve his own game.
But as revealed in season two of Netflix’s Quarterback, this deep sense of focus once collided with an unexpected source, his own jersey number as Jared Goff took his desired pick away.

St. Brown, who wore No. 8 at USC, had originally intended to choose his professional jersey number based on how many receivers were selected before him in the 2021 NFL Draft.
That number was supposed to be a statement, a wearable reminder of his place in the draft order. However, a small mistake in the process led him down a different path, his partner reveals.
“He’ll never admit this,” Brooklyn Adams said. “But he asked me to count the amount of receivers (drafted) before him.
“And that was going to be his number. And I messed up. And it’s not 14, and I told him it was 14.”
In truth, St. Brown was the 17th receiver selected, meaning 16 were chosen before him. But based on Adams’ miscount, he selected No. 14, the number he continues to wear to this day in Detroit.
The result of that minor miscalculation had wider implications than expected as Goff, the team’s quarterback, went on to land the number upon his trade from the Los Angeles Rams, meaning it’s now out of the receiver’s reach.
Goff, a player who has worn it consistently since his high school days at Marin Catholic, won’t be keen to surrender it either and Brown ultimately had to watch his dream statement slip away.

St. Brown’s commitment to proving himself hasn’t waned since entering the NFL. Over three seasons, he has become one of the Lions’ most productive offensive weapons and a key contributor to the team’s resurgence under head coach Dan Campbell.
Meanwhile, Goff has also cemented his role as the leader of a Lions team that now harbors legitimate Super Bowl aspirations. Entering the 2025 season, Detroit is viewed as a contender in the NFC, fresh off a division title and poised for a run deep into the playoffs.
The team’s campaign opens on September 7 with a divisional clash against the Green Bay Packers. Expectations are higher than ever for a franchise still seeking its first Super Bowl appearance.
They will look to the likes of St. Brown, Sam LaPorta and Jahmyr Gibbs to spearhead their offense, with the latter now being considered the third best running back in the NFL as per ESPN’s annual top-10 positional rankings.
Voted on by over 70 coaches, scouts, and executives, Gibbs comes in just behind the Philadelphia Eagles’ Saquon Barkley and the Baltimore Ravens’ Derrick Henry after producing 1412 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns in the 2024/25 NFL season.
