Last year, Travis Kelce had the Kansas City Chiefs’ front office sweating with uncertainty over whether he would hang up his cleats. It wasn’t until after their Super Bowl LIX loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that he confirmed he’d return for one more season, hoping to redeem a lackluster performance and pursue another championship in 2026.
Now, it seems all signs point to Kelce calling it quits after this season. The legendary tight end is expected to step away from the NFL and embrace a life more immersed in pop culture-alongside his partner, global music icon Taylor Swift.
Travis Kelce could be set up in a well-intentioned trap by Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs
A goodbye that will break Kansas City’s heart
Even if the farewell is announced well in advance, it won’t lessen the pain for Chiefs fans. With tears likely to accompany his final games, they will watch a franchise icon take his final snaps-a player who has left an undeniable legacy not only in Kansas City but across the league.
With Patrick Mahomes still in his prime, the time is now for Chiefs executives to start preparing for what comes next.
According to Anthony Palacios of Last Word on Sports, the ideal replacement might already be in the division: Las Vegas Raiders tight end Michael Mayer, who could arrive via trade.
Kelce is looking for vengeance, but he won’t last for more than a year, so they need to start planning for the future. Mahomes does well bringing out the best in a target, and even though Mayer hasn’t found his footing yet, he could change things around in his career with one of the most complete teams in the league,
Palacios wrote.
Mayer could be a strategic acquisition for the Chiefs, offering both protection for Mahomes and the ability to execute the explosive plays that have become a trademark of their offense
Widely regarded by some experts as the best tight end prospect in the 2023 draft class, Mayer’s potential remains high. Under the guidance of Andy Reid-who’s proven time and again that he knows how to maximize talent-Mayer might be exactly what Kansas City needs as Kelce’s eventual successor.
But acquiring him won’t be easy
Any potential deal would involve prying Mayer away from a division rival, and the Raiders would be understandably reluctant to strengthen the very team they’re trying to dethrone.
Though a trade negotiation would likely be tough, even contentious, Mayer seems worth the effort. His arrival could provide an immediate boost to the Chiefs’ offense and ensure a smoother transition once Kelce departs.
Now the question remains: will Kansas City’s front office see the same value in Mayer that others already do? Because from the outside looking in, he appears to be the missing piece for the Chiefs’ near future.
