Fauja Singh, considerado o maratonista mais velho do mundo, morreu neste domingo, aos 114 anos, após ser atropelado por um veículo não identificado enquanto caminhava por sua aldeia natal em Beas Pind, no estado de Punjab, na Índia. A morte do atleta, que se tornou símbolo de longevidade, superação e fé, provocou uma onda de homenagens de líderes políticos, instituições esportivas e admiradores de todo o mundo.

De acordo com a rede televisiva inglesa BBC, a polícia local afirmou que moradores tentaram socorrer Singh, levando-o ao hospital, mas ele não resistiu aos ferimentos. “Uma busca está em andamento e o acusado será capturado em breve”, afirmou o policial Harvinder Singh.

Singh, que ficou conhecido como “Tornado de Turbante”, iniciou sua trajetória nas maratonas aos 89 anos, depois de uma vida como agricultor no Punjab e marcada por tragédias familiares, como a perda da esposa e do filho mais novo. Enfrentando a depressão, encontrou na corrida um novo propósito. Sua estreia em provas de longa distância foi na Maratona de Londres, em 2000. Nos 13 anos seguintes, completou nove maratonas e se tornou um ícone do esporte de resistência.

Superação e reconhecimento mundial

Nascido em 1º de abril de 1911, segundo seu passaporte britânico, Singh nunca teve certidão de nascimento, o que impediu seu reconhecimento oficial pelo Guinness World Records como o maratonista mais velho da história. Ainda assim, em 2011, ele se tornou o primeiro centenário a completar uma maratona, em Toronto.

Ao longo da carreira, conquistou feitos notáveis, como correr 10 km em Hong Kong, aos 102 anos, e ganhar fama internacional com uma campanha da Adidas ao lado de Muhammad Ali, sob o slogan Nothing is Impossible. Em 2012, foi um dos condutores da tocha olímpica nos Jogos de Londres. Em 2006, foi recebido pela Rainha Elizabeth II no Palácio de Buckingham.

“Eu era o mesmo Fauja Singh antes de entrar no mundo da corrida, mas ela me deu uma missão de vida”, declarou em entrevista à BBC Punjabi, em junho, quando ainda caminhava diariamente por sua vila.

Simplicidade e disciplina como filosofia de vida

Singh atribuía sua longevidade a uma vida regrada. “Comer menos, correr mais e permanecer feliz — esse é o segredo”, dizia. Vegetariano, mantinha uma rotina ativa mesmo depois de se aposentar oficialmente das competições em 2013. Passava os últimos anos entre a Índia e o Reino Unido, sempre próximo da família e de seu treinador e amigo, Harmander Singh.

Além do impacto esportivo, Singh se tornou referência cultural e espiritual para a comunidade sikh e para idosos de todo o mundo. “Ele era um homem verdadeiramente inspirador. Sua disciplina, vida simples e profunda humildade deixaram uma marca duradoura em mim”, escreveu a deputada britânica Preet Kaur Gill.

O clube de corrida Sikhs in the City, ao qual Fauja era ligado, anunciou que realizará eventos especiais para celebrar seu legado.
