Just a few days ago, on the podcast hosted by Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, Patriots owner Robert Kraft was asked about the biggest risk he had ever taken as team owner. Without hesitation, he said hiring Bill Belichick as head coach was that moment.
Now, the current head coach at the University of North Carolina, Bill Belichick, has responded-making it clear he wasn’t about to stay silent.

Kraft claimed he took a gamble by hiring Belichick back then, but the legendary coach fired back in a surprising way, asserting that he was the one who actually took the risk.
As I told Robert multiple times through the years, I took a big risk by taking the New England Patriots head coaching job,” Belichick told ESPN in response to questions. “I already had an opportunity to be the Head Coach of the New York Jets, but the ownership situation was unstable.
Belichick also revealed that several people within the NFL advised him against taking the Patriots job due to the reputation of their owner, Robert Kraft.
I had been warned by multiple previous Patriots’ coaches, as well as other members of other NFL organizations and the media, that the New England job was going to come with many internal obstacles,” Belichick said. “I made it clear that we would have to change the way the team was managed to regain the previously attained success.
The rest, of course, is history. Belichick took the reins in New England and led the team to six Super Bowl titles, becoming one of the most successful coaches in NFL history. He parted ways with the Patriots in 2023, finishing with an impressive 266-121 record.
Belichick thanks Kraft for letting him build his own team
Part of what made Belichick’s time in New England so successful was the trust Kraft placed in him to construct the team according to his own philosophy. That freedom proved key to their dominance, which included nine Super Bowl appearances and six championships.
I appreciated Robert giving me the opportunity to make those changes and build a program that was consistent with my vision for a championship team
Belichick told ESPN.
Thanks to that level of control and his ability to choose the right players for his system, Belichick was able to build a historic team that defined an era in the NFL.
Now, Belichick has stepped away from the professional ranks. He’s transitioned to the college game, taking over as head coach of the University of North Carolina’s football program. He will make his official debut on September 1, when his team faces TCU.
It is expected that the University of North Carolina will rise and start to be one of the best in the NCAA, due to its new coach. With Belichick, anything can happen with him on the sidelines.
