El renacer de Héctor Catalá: de sufrir un calvario a volver a ser campeón de Europa

“Los últimos años han sido extremadamente complicados. Ha habido que luchar muchísimo porque en muchos momentos lo lógico hubiese sido abandonar”, confiesa Héctor Catalá. Por eso, el oro en el Europeo de triatlón paralímpico hace poco más de un mes en Besançon (Francia) es mucho más que otra medalla en un palmarés en el que hay una plata paralímpica (Tokio 2020), un oro mundial (2019) y otro continental (2016).

Su vida desde aquella plata en Japón se transformó en un calvario. El  sueño pero se tornó en pesadilla el día después de subir al podio. Se fue a correr 40 minutos y acabó medio mareado y deshidratado. “Fue el principio del hoyo que me autocavé. Empecé a ir a nadar con un nudo en la garganta, tenía ganas de llorar y no sabía por qué. Mi rendimiento deportivo empezó a ser nefasto. Tenía ansiedad. Cuesta entender que después de una medalla en los Juegos sufras un burn out (quemarse)”, reconoce. Pero no es el único al que le pasó.

Las analíticas tampoco ayudaban. “Me llegaron a decir que el deporte de alto nivel se había acabado para mí por mis niveles hematológicos. Tenía los valores contrarios a los que debe tener un deportista de resistencia”, rememora el triatleta valenciano. “No es la primera ni la segunda que me dicen en la vida que esto no es para mí. Cuando tenía 10 años, en la revisión médica del club de natación nos dijeron a mi hermano y a mí que no valíamos para deportes de resistencia. Luego, en  Segundo de Bachiller, cuando le dije a la psicopedagoga que quería estudiar una Ingeniería me dijo que no iba a poder con mi problema visual (la enfermedad de Best es una degeneración macular que comienza con visión central borrosa y suele acabar con una pérdida completa de la visión central). Y pensé: ‘los cojones’. Es la carrera de la que más orgulloso me siento”, reconoce este ingeniero industrial, además de triatleta.

Una carrera de obstáculos hasta París e incluso allí

Su día a día en el triatlón se convirtió en una carrera de obstáculos a la que se añadió la lesión de Gustavo Rodríguez. Tuvo que cambiar de guía. Gracias a su cabezonería, al apoyo de su entorno y a la ayuda psicológica llegó a los Juegos de París con opciones de podio junto a Carlos Oliver como guía. La recta final tampoco fue un camino de rosas. Le infiltraron por una inflamación del cartílago de una rodilla y estuvo dos meses sin poder entrenar y un mes antes de la cita en la capital francesa tuvo el Covid.

El día de la competición en París, en plena remontada sobre el tándem sufrieron una avería. Por primera vez en su vida, tuvo que retirarse. “Todo se fue a la mierda. Me cuesta muchísimo llorar y estuve hora y media sin parar”, reconoce. “Nunca sabremos si podíamos haber remontado hasta subir al podio, pero estaba en el mejor estado de forma de mi vida, con mucha hambre y con ganas de resarcirme conmigo mismo. Mi sensación es que hubiésemos peleado la medalla“, reconoce. Después de aquel varapalo, siguió por inercia y sumó un bronce en el Europeo con Diego Méntrida como guía. El suyo, tras la caída de París, tenía un edema óseo y Jota, que era el deportista al que guiaba Diego, tampoco iba a competir.

Vuelve a disfrutar del triatlón

A finales del año pasado llegó a preguntarse si quería seguir. Llevaba tres años muy duros. ¿Merecía la pena el esfuerzo? “Continúo porque me encanta entrenar, amo esto y seguiría haciéndolo si tuviese un trabajo ordinario. Entrenar es mi estilo de vida. Antes de ser deportista profesional, cuando trabajaba como ingeniero, me levantaba a las 6 a nadar, a mediodía iba a correr y al salir de trabajar me subía al rodillo”, recuerda. Mientras atiende a MARCA al otro lado del teléfono está entrenando precisamente en el rodillo. “Tú eres tan bueno como tu siguiente carrera. El ego hace tiempo que lo tengo cubierto y sigo porque esto me gusta mucho”, insiste.

Catalá ha curado las heridas y ha vuelto a disfrutar del triatlón. Se siente muy agradecido a los patrocinadores que le han seguido apoyando después de París. Perdió la beca pero no las ganas de seguir luchando. Que creyesen en él ha sido una inyección de moral. También que apostase por él Méntrida, “cuando mi tendencia no era al alza, sino a la baja”, dice entre risas. Con él ha vuelto a lo más alto del podio este año. “Me aporta tranquilidad y confianza. Compitiendo es un killer, va con el cuchillo en la boca”, asegura Catalá, que en los dos últimos meses está aprendiendo a conciliar sus 30 horas de entrenamiento con el cuidado de su hijo Pau.

El oro europeo no le ha hecho sentir en una nube, pese a todo lo que hay detrás. “Estos años he aprendido que no soy tan bueno como en mis victorias ni tan malo como en las derrotas, pero en esta sociedad con todo a golpe de click y de inmediatez, cuanto más cuesta algo y más hay que lucharlo, más satisfacción da”, reflexiona. Y recuerda que fue en la Serie Mundial de Taranto, justo antes del Europeo, la que fue un punto de inflexión. “Me di cuenta de que todavía sigo valiendo para esto”, dice.

El objetivo en el Mundial es disfrutar y darlo todo, quiero una carrera sin sobresaltos y poder luchar por el podio

Y aunque quiere ir a Los Ángeles 2028, prefiere seguir “kilómetro a kilómetro”, viviendo el aquí y el ahora y poniéndose metas a corto plazo. Pasará agosto entrenando en el CAR de Sierra Nevada donde preparará el Mundial que se celebra en octubre en Australia. Antes disputará como test el Campeonato de España y la Copa del Mundo en Alhandra (Portugal). “El objetivo en el Mundial es disfrutar y darlo todo, quiero una carrera sin sobresaltos y poder luchar por el podio. Quiero volver a estar en el podio de un Mundial. Es muy difícil, pero por qué no poder volver a ganar un Mundial. No voy a por el 5 sino a por el 10″, dice. Y si logra la medalla el 18 de octubre, será el mejor regalo de cumpleaños para su padre.
