Im Halbfinale des Basketball-Pokals wurde Martin Breunig (33) vom Syntainics MBC zum Helden. Eine Sekunde vor Schluss sicherte der Center einen Abpraller und beförderte den Ball zum 95:93 in den Korb. Die Weißenfelser erreichten zum ersten Mal in ihrer Geschichte das Finale – und holten sich gegen Bamberg den Pott.
Breunig verpasste den Saison-Endspurt wegen einer Fingerverletzung. Dennoch wollte der MBC unbedingt mit 2,03-Meter-Hünen verlängern. Doch den Leverkusener mit thailändischen Wurzeln zieht es in die Ferne.

Nach Informationen von Transfer-Insider Rupert Fabig („Hamburger Abendblatt“) geht es für ihn zu den New Taipeh Kings nach Taiwan. Der Top-Klub wurde gerade in der relativ neuen Sieber-Liga TPBL Meister und qualifizierte sich dadurch für die „East Asia Super League“ – eine Art asiatische Champions League.

Die sportliche Leitung bei den „Königen“ ist ein alter Bekannter: Kult-Trainer John Patrick (57).
Der dreimalige „Trainer des Jahres“ der BBL (2009, 2010, 2021) wurde Ende März bei den MHP Riesen Ludwigsburg gefeuert. Danach entschied er sich, trotz Angeboten aus seiner zweiten Heimat Japan, für das Abenteuer Taiwan. Nach Saisonende verabschiedete sich dann auch noch sein Ludwigsburger Co-Trainer Lars Masell (44) überraschend aus der Barockstadt, um dem Vernehmen nach Patrick in die 4-Mio.-Einwohner-Stadt Neu-Taipeh zu folgen.

Breunig folgt dabei aber nicht nur dem Ruf des Geldes. Rund um seine Einsätze für die thailändische hatte er stets betont, wie sehr ihm die dortige Mentalität zusagt, und dass er am Ende seiner Karriere gerne noch mal in Asien spielen wolle. Nun bot sich die Chance.
Patrick und Breunig kennen sich zudem aus der Saison 2016/17. Breunig hatte damals nach seiner College-Zeit an der University of Montana in Ludwigsburg seinen ersten Profi-Vertrag unterschrieben. Doch weil er sich damals auf seiner Position gegen einen gewissen Johannes Thiemann (heute 31) nicht durchsetzen konnte, wechselte der talentierte „Big“ nach Bonn.
Kurios: Weltmeister Thiemann ist mittlerweile ebenfalls in Asien gelandet. Er verlängerte diesen Sommer seinen Vertrag in Japan bei den Gunma Crane Thunders.
