It appears that everything is in place for Luka Doncic to finalize a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Slovenian star is poised to showcase his full potential in the upcoming season with the purple and gold. However, Doncic also remains committed to his national team, as he is set to compete in EuroBasket this summer.
Luka Doncic arrived in Los Angeles this past February after spending six and a half seasons with his former team, Dallas Mavericks. The Slovenian star was traded to the Lakers with hopes of forming an unforgettable duo alongside LeBron James.

Now, Doncic is reportedly willing to sign a four-year contract extension with the California NBA franchise. However, despite his commitment, the EuroBasket appear to be one setback that can delay the finalization of the deal.

If the Los Angeles Lakers want to finalize Luka Doncic’s new contract, they will need to act quickly within the next week. Doni is expected to be very busy during this time, just as he officially becomes eligible to sign the extension. However, according to longtime NBA insider Marc Stein, any delay in the process is not expected to last long.
“The Lakers’ Luka Doni, I’m told, is scheduled to return soon to the United States for a long-planned Jordan Brand promotional tour for his signature sneaker line.” Said Steiner in a post on his X account and then he added that, “He’s expected to join Slovenia’s national team in early August to begin EuroBasket preparations.”
Luka Doncic remains calm about signing his contract extension, knowing he still has time to finalize a new deal with the Lakers. This isn’t new for the Slovenian star, back in 2021, he took a similar approach with the Dallas Mavericks, signing his extension on August 10, just two days after finishing his international basketball commitments.
EuroBasket 2025 Preview: Can Doncic Deliver Slovenia’s First Title?
EuroBasket is set to tip off on August 27 and will be hosted across Latvia, Cyprus, Finland, and Poland. Slovenia, considered one of the top contenders, will look to claim the title this summer with Luka Doni leading the charge. The Slovenian squad is placed in Group D, where they will face tough opponents including France, Poland, Israel, Belgium, and Iceland.
In this continental competition, traditional powerhouses like Spain and France are expected to be among the main contenders. Spain, with a rich legacy in EuroBasket and past stars like Pau Gasol, now looks to players like Willy Hernangómez to carry the torch. France will also be a strong force, bringing experience and talent through veterans such as Nando De Colo, who has consistently shined on the international stage.
As usual, Serbia stands among the favorites, led by NBA superstar Nikola Jokic, who is expected to guide the team in their pursuit of the EuroBasket title. Another major name to watch is Giannis Antetokounmpo, who will aim to shine with Greece and lead his national team to championship glory.
And then there’s the Slovenian side, led by Luka Doncic, determined to secure a major international trophy with his national team. Slovenia will kick off their EuroBasket 2025 campaign against host nation Poland at the Katowice Arena, a challenging opener that will serve as Doni’s first major test in the tournament.
