Jerry Jones made headlines on Sunday by locking up one of his offensive cornerstones, though not the one many expected.
The Dallas Cowboys owner signed Jake Ferguson to a four-year, $52 million extension, the largest tight end contract in franchise history.

The deal came on the same day the Los Angeles Chargers handed offensive lineman Rashawn Slater a $114 million contract, the richest in annual average value for his position.
Ferguson‘s payday provides stability for Dak Prescott‘s passing attack, but it immediately reignited conversation around the team’s biggest defensive star.
Micah Parsons, who has opened his career with four straight seasons of double-digit sacks, remains without an extension as training camp unfolds.
Longtime Cowboys reporter Clarence Hill Jr. captured the sentiment on social media, noting the surprise among fans that Ferguson‘s deal arrived before Parsons‘.
Supporters made their voices heard at practice over the weekend as well, breaking into chants of “Pay Micah!” as Jones observed from the sideline.

When asked about the chants the following day, Jones shrugged off the noise while reminding reporters that the Cowboys faced similar pressure a year ago with CeeDee Lamb.
“That was a faint little sound compared to the way they were hollering last year, ‘Pay Lamb,'” Jones said. “Whoever’s not in, you can count on a few hollering that. But it was a big loud chant last year on Lamb. It doesn’t change anything. We want to pay Micah, too. He’s got to want to be paid, too.”
The Cowboys are juggling several key contracts beyond Parsons. Wide receiver George Pickens, cornerback DaRon Bland, and kicker Brandon Aubrey are all set to hit free agency after the 2025 season.
Guard Tyler Smith is also approaching the end of his rookie deal and will be eligible for a new contract within the next year.
For now, the Ferguson extension marks a significant investment in Prescott‘s security blanket and the Cowboys‘ offensive identity.
But as training camp continues, the conversation is bound to return to Parsons. His elite production and leadership on defense make him arguably the most important piece of Dallas’ roster puzzle.
