Eddie Hearn, one of the most influential promoters in international boxing, expressed concern about the reforms proposed under the name of the “Ali Renaissance Act”. The controversy arises around a new bill that does not directly amend the 2000 Muhammad Ali Act, but seeks to change the 1996 Professional Boxing Safety Act. This proposal could be presented to the authorities before the end of 2025, and has been promoted by a new promotional group backed by UFC-Zuffa Boxing and TKO Group, in alliance with Saudi businessman Turki Alalshikh.

For Hearn, the approach of this group is based on “control and ownership” of the fighters, something that he says goes against the essence of professional boxing. “Fighters are not designed to just do what they are told. They have their own judgement, their own teams and promoters who work for their career,” he stressed.
The Matchroom Boxing leader also revealed that many fighters have already spoken out:“The fighters I’ve spoken to are wondering why they’re trying to remove a law that’s there to protect them. It’s not a good look”.
Boxing reforms in the United States
Although Matchroom is based in the UK, its influence in US boxing is considerable. Hearn warns that the current proposal could open the door to unfair practices, especially with lower-profile fighters who would be more willing to give in out of necessity or opportunity
“When I look at the fighters they’ve recruited, they’re fighters who would do whatever TKO wants, because they’re looking for an opportunity. But the big stars are not going to lend themselves to that,” he said.
Hearn asks for respect for the boxer
The debate not only revolves around legal regulations, but also the philosophy of boxing as a sport and business. For Hearn, respect for the fighter must remain the priority, and the laws that protect their integrity should not be weakened under business interests.
