As the Dallas Cowboys prepare for the 2025 NFL season, all eyes are on Micah Parsons, the team’s star defensive end. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the negotiations between Parsons and the Cowboys have regressed. In fact, Schefter reported that the two sides are currently “further away from a deal” than they were earlier this year.
Schefter suggested that the relationship between the Cowboys and Parsons has become increasingly strained, with both sides seemingly unhappy with the situation. This disconnect has raised concerns about the future of Parsons in Dallas.
Financial considerations and internal pressures
One of the key reasons for the lack of progress in Parsons’ contract talks appears to be the Cowboys’ financial situation. Dallas recently signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year, $240 million extension and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb to a $136 million deal. Given these significant commitments, the Cowboys may be hesitant to offer another massive extension, especially to a player with some injury concerns.
Parsons’ current market value is estimated at $37.9 million per year, with Spotrac projecting a four-year, $151 million contract for him. However, the Cowboys are not yet willing to meet those terms, leading to a prolonged stalemate.
Despite the stalled negotiations, Parsons has made it clear that he is committed to the team and the season ahead. He reported to training camp, stating that his decision to be there was for his teammates and not for team owner Jerry Jones. This professional approach contrasts with the tension surrounding the contract situation.
As the Cowboys prepare for the season, the pressure mounts for both sides to reach a resolution. While Parsons has repeatedly expressed his desire to remain in Dallas, the team must balance its salary cap while making tough decisions about the future. If no deal is reached, the Cowboys risk losing one of the league’s top defenders, which could significantly impact their defensive strategy in the years to come.
