The New York Yankees remain active ahead of the trade deadline and completed a trade during their game against the Tampa Bay Rays. José Caballero will be a new player for the Bronx Bombers, according to Adam Berry of MLB.com.

Caballero was seen saying goodbye to his teammates during the game, and it’s reported that the Rays will receive Triple-A outfielder Everson Pereira in return, per the same source.
José Caballero’s long road to MLB
Like many other players, Caballero faced a tough journey to reach the Major Leagues, debuting with the Seattle Mariners in 2023, where he produced 2.5 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) in just 104 games. This caught the attention of the Rays, who needed an option at shortstop. Tampa Bay and Seattle made a trade that sent Luke Raley to the Mariners and Caballero to the Rays.
The Yankees’ new player led the American League with 44 stolen bases last season but was caught 16 times, the highest in MLB. He racked up 33 steals in his first 83 games this year, also leading the Majors.
On defense, one of the Yankees‘ weaknesses, Caballero delivers versatility. He started as a second baseman, third baseman, and shortstop between 2023 and 2024, and this year moved to the outfield to expand his resume.
Caballero also joins the Yankees with several years of contract control. At 28 years old, he’ll be eligible for arbitration for the first time this upcoming offseason and will remain under team control until the end of the 2029 season.
