Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce may be trying to move forward after a brutal Super Bowl loss earlier this year, but not everyone is convinced he’s telling the full truth.
ESPN radio host Freddie Coleman has openly accused the future Hall of Famer of fabricating his public stance on how he’s processed the devastating defeat at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Travis Kelce shares why Chiefs are special.
Back in February, the Chiefs were soundly beaten in a matchup that denied them a historic three-peat. Kelce, now 35, was visibly subdued in the immediate aftermath of the game, which saw Kansas City outclassed for nearly the entire four quarters.
However, as training camp for the 2025 NFL season kicked off, Kelce struck a noticeably different tone, seemingly shrugging off the loss and redirecting his focus toward the upcoming season.
But Coleman isn’t buying it.
“I really don’t believe him, that he just threw that in the trash that quickly because it’s one thing to go for a three-peat and you don’t get it,” Coleman said on his ESPN radio show.
“But then to have the stones beaten out of you like that by the Philadelphia Eagles, he can say he processed that in the trash compactor all he wants. He still smells it a little bit in the trash compactor when you get beat like that.”
Kelce’s confidence meets Coleman’s skepticism
Coleman, a veteran voice in the world of sports broadcasting who has been with ESPN since 2004, didn’t stop there. While he acknowledged that moving on from a loss is necessary for professional athletes, he remained adamant that Kelce‘s comments don’t hold water.
“I believe what he’s saying in terms of you gotta flush that and move past it because you can’t do anything about it,” Coleman continued.
“But to say that he’s forgotten about it or doesn’t think that much about it, I don’t know if I’m buying that from the artist formerly known as Travis Kelce, the Chiefs tight end.”
Kelce‘s claims of a renewed focus come after a notably quieter offseason than years past. Instead of jet-setting with girlfriend Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour or indulging in media appearances, save for his hosting gig on Prime Video’s Are You Smarter Than A Celebrity?-Kelce has apparently been prioritizing his physical health.
According to eyewitnesses, including head coach Andy Reid, Kelce has returned to training camp in outstanding condition, ready to lead the Chiefs once again.
And while his 2024 season wasn’t poor by most standards, he remained one of the NFL’s top tight ends, it didn’t quite match the elite level of performance fans have come to expect.
With expectations high for the 2025 season, the pressure is mounting for Kelce and the Chiefs to rebound. But according to Coleman, the wounds from their Super Bowl collapse may not be as far in the past as Kelce claims.
“Even if Kelce is primed to have a dominant year, I still don’t believe he removed the chip on his shoulder from that Super Bowl loss in New Orleans,” Coleman concluded.
For now, whether Kelce is still haunted by that defeat, or using it as quiet motivation, remains a matter of debate. But one thing is clear: his critics will be watching closely.
