Léo Bisiaux se impone en Valpuesta después de un ataque de Landa que no llegó a buen puerto

El día que tenía marcado en rojo en el calendario Mikel Landa terminó con una fuga de los favoritos… y esa fuga, con la victoria de un sorprendente Léo Bisiaux (AG2R), quien, entre la ventaja obtenida y la bonificación, se pone líder de la Vuelta a Burgos. Es el primer triunfo como profesional del joven francés, de apenas 20 años. Además, le arrebata el maillot de primer clasificado a un Roger Adrià para el que la subida a Orduña fue demasiado. 

La segunda etapa más montañosa de esta Vuelta a Burgos, por detrás de la jornada reina con final en las Lagunas de Neila, se antojaba ideal para comprobar las fuerzas reales del pelotón y para que los favoritos de la general recuperaran el tiempo que perdieron el primer día. Cuatro puertos puntuables en los 185 kilómetros entre el monasterio de San Pedro de Cardeña y Valpuesta: el alto de Barcina (de tercera, 7 kilómetros al 3,5%), el puerto de Oceka (de tercera, 2,7 kilómetros al 8,9%), el alto de las Campas (de tercera, 6,2 kilómetros al 3%) y el puerto de Orduña, el rey del día (de primera, 8 kilómetros al 7,6%). 

La fuga del día tardó en formarse más de la media de esta Vuelta a Burgos. Grupos relativamente numerosos, de en torno a 10 corredores, trataban de distanciarse del pelotón; la mayor parte de ellos pertenecían a equipos de categoría ProTeam, deseosos de tener protagonismo en la carrera. Pasados más de 40 kilómetros desde el inicio, un grupo de cinco corredores se consolidó en la cabeza: Sander de Pestel (AG2R), Gorka Sorarrain (Caja Rural), Hugo Aznar (Kern Pharma), Iker Mintegi (Euskaltel) y Mario Silva (Illes Balears). Poco después, a esa fuga se unió Daniel Cavia (Burgos Burpellet). 

El ataque de Mikel Landa

El pelotón le otorgó a la fuga una ventaja de cerca de cuatro minutos, la cual conservaban los escapados pasado el ecuador de la etapa. La fuga empezó a mostrar grietas en su formación en el puerto de Oceka, con su pendiente media por encima del 8%. Hugo Aznar subió el ritmo e hizo sufrir a Silva y Mintegi, pero el que se llevó el máximo de puntos en la cumbre fue el corredor del Caja Rural Gorka Sorarrain. Este se marchó en la bajada junto a De Pestel, metiéndole un minuto a sus otros cuatro compañeros de fuga y casi tres minutos al resto del pelotón, pero los escapados se reunieron de nuevo antes de llegar al esprint intermedio. 

Silva, Cavia y Aznar fueron neutralizados por el pelotón justo cuando se produjo el hecho que todo el público esperaba: el ataque de Mikel Landa (Soudal). En el aniversario de su primera victoria como profesional, precisamente en la Vuelta a Burgos de 2011, entonces en la etapa 5, cuando tenía apenas 21 años. A 36 kilómetros para la meta, el de Murgia (muy cerca de su municipio natal) empezó a recortarle distancia a la fuga e hizo cima en el alto de Las Campas en tercera posición, a un minuto de Sorarrain y De Pestel. 

Un final para los favoritos

En el pie del puerto de Orduña, poco más de 50 segundos separaban a Landa de la cabeza de carrera, diferencia que iba reduciendo poco a poco el de Soudal. Sin embargo, en la subida fue cazado de nuevo por el pelotón, más o menos al mismo tiempo que De Pestel se quedaba en solitario al frente. El grupo principal se iba desgajando metro a metro, corredor a corredor, ante el endiablado ritmo que estaba poniendo el Lidl-Trek en la subida. Los pocos ciclistas que quedaban en el grupo neutralizaron a De Pestel a falta de tres kilómetros para la cima, y la etapa tomó un cariz mucho más estratégico.

Los que llevaban el mejor ritmo por delante eran Léo Bisiaux (AG2R) y Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), y cogieron unos segundos de ventaja. En el grupo inmediatamente posterior resistían Egan Bernal (INEOS), Isaac del Toro (UAE) y Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull), entre otros de los favoritos. Al colombiano se le atragantaron las últimas rampas, mientras que Lorenzo Fortunato y su compatriota Pellizzari apretaban y alcanzaban a los dos primeros, con Del Toro ligeramente por detrás. El mexicano pudo unirse al grupo cabecero en la bajada, formando una cabeza de carrera de cinco corredores con algo más de medio minuto de ventaja. Al final, a falta de menos de un kilómetro, del grupo saltó Bisiaux, y ninguno pudo seguir su movimiento.
