The Jacksonville Jaguars thought they made NFL history before the season even began on Saturday night when Cam Little landed a 70-yard field goal, only to suffer heartbreak as it turns out his effort on August 9 won’t count.
During a recent preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jags’ kicker stunned fans and commentators alike by nailing a 70-yard field goal, an unprecedented distance in league history.

Little’s 70-yard kick occurred just before halftime, with the Jaguars trailing 14-6 as time expired in the second quarter, and as the ball soared through the uprights, including Travis Hunter, immediately celebrated the effort.
The kick would have surpassed the current official NFL record held by Justin Tucker, whose 66-yard field goal set in 2021 if it had been made during the regular season.
But it turns out that it won’t count as NFL rules dictate that preseason achievements do not count toward official records, despite the historic moment and celebrations afterwards.
Regardless, onlookers and fans were quick to share their excitement as the commentator, Bucky Brooks, captured the moment well, exclaiming, “Holy smokes,” as Little’s kick sailed through the posts.
Little’s career has been promising since being drafted by Jacksonville in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he converted 27 out of 29 field goal attempts. Now he proves he can convert from practically anywhere within human-known range.

Whilst the feat will remain unofficial, fans won’t be forgetting it any time soon and it has already become a highlight in the Jacksonville’s early 2025 campaign and sparked reactions from the team’s first-year head coach, Liam Coen.
The 39-year-old, balancing the pressures of his first year in charge of the Jaguars and his responsibilities as offensive play-caller, expressed enthusiasm over Little’s bold attempt – in what could be an ace-in-the-hole weapon for the team.
“We are [at] five seconds,” Coen said, “And we tried to run all slants to get a down-down timeout situation to try to get past the 50 [yard line] if you could.
“There wasn’t an easy completion right now. So, we checked it down and just banged it. Cam just gave me a look and was like, ‘yeah, I want it.’
“And so he gave it a go. Yeah, that was pretty cool to see, huh?”
Coen’s willingness to embrace risk and innovation has been on display in this preseason, not only with Little’s historic kick but also with his management of Travis Hunter, whose role and playing time remain carefully considered.
The 31-25 preseason loss to the Steelers provided valuable insight into the team’s depth and potential, with the 70-yard field goal standing out as a moment of exceptional talent and confidence.
While Little’s record-setting kick won’t be officially recognized, it sends a strong message about his capabilities and sets an encouraging tone for the Jaguars as they prepare for the regular season.
