However, everything changed when a fan brought a sign comparing Smith to the problematic JaMarcus Russell. According to The Athletic, this angered Smith, who responded by showing both of his middle fingers whilerunning onto the field.
The incident has cast a negative light on Geno Smith, placing him at the center of a storm of criticism. The gesture has sparked widespread debate, drawing mixed reactions. Stepping into the discussion, head coach Pete Carroll has publicly come to Smith’s defense.

On Sunday, Pete Carroll addressed reporters and was asked about Geno Smith’s gesture toward Seahawks fans. “Did you see what the sign said?” Carroll replied rhetorically, before quickly adding, “Next question.” The brief exchange suggested that Carroll understood the situation but chose to downplay its significance.
Many anticipated a different response from the head coach, given his storied history with the Seahawks, where he led the franchise to a Super Bowl title in 2013. Nevertheless, his remarks underscored a clear commitment to the Raiders and his players. There have even been photos circulating that appear to show the head coach attempting to remove the sign from the Seahawks fan.
The preseason rolls on, and the Raiders now turn their attention to their first home game at Allegiant Stadium, where they will face the San Francisco 49ers. Pete Carroll’s squad is expecting a strong turnout from the home crowd as they aim to secure their first victory of the preseason.
