The injuries to Indiana Fever’s three point guards were a major blow to the team.
Caitlin Clark‘s groin injury, Aari McDonald‘s broken right foot, and Sydney Colson‘s torn left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) forced the team to restructure.
Caitlin Clark’s disgust faces seem to be aimed at the fan refs
Sophie Cunningham has taken on the role of point guard at least until CC’s return, as the other two players have already been ruled out for the rest of the season. Odyssey Sims also joined the team on an emergency contract.
Beyond letting them know they are missed during the game, their teammates and fans wanted to show their support during their recovery.
Before the game against the Dallas Wings, which slipped away with an 80-81 loss, the Fever had a sweet gesture for Aari and Sydney.
On a large table, there were cards with photos of both players on which fans could personalize and leave their messages of encouragement for both stars. On their official X account, the team shared this news:
“Get well soon Syd and Aari,” the Fever wrote. “On your way into tonight’s game, stop by section 14 to send well wishes to Sydney Colson and Aari McDonald!“
Fan reaction to this gesture
Indiana fans were moved by this initiative and left their messages not only on the cards but also on social media.
“Get well soon Syd and Aari,” one of them commented on the post. “Love you girls! Wishing you a speedy mend,” wrote a second fan. “Speedy recover GOATs!!!” another user wished them. “Great gesture, I wish them both a very blessed day and a speedy recovery. Sending love from Scotland,” replied another follower.
White’s analysis
Beyond the team’s gesture, Paige Bueckers’ Dallas Wings won a hard-fought victory by the smallest of margins and broke their streak of five consecutive losses.
In response, head coach Stephanie White highlighted the importance of her three injured players as a key factor-though not the only one-in this defeat:
“All of our point guards are injured. I think that’s the first thing. It’s tough… because point guards are the ones who get you organized.”
However, some fans pointed out her poor strategic decisions, and she herself admitted that she “probably should have used” her last timeout earlier.
Meanwhile, her friction with the refereeing, which Clark had to stop, also stood out. After the game, she did not sugarcoat the situation: “I think there’s a double standard in how people get their calls,” she said. She also stated that Kelsey Mitchell “is held or chucked on every possession” and that Aliyah Boston is “the worst officiated post player in the league.“
Meanwhile, the team will face the Washington Mystics this Friday, August 15, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and try to bounce back from this loss.
