The Indiana Fever is struggling to stay afloat amid Caitlin Clark’s extended absence. With a recent losing streak and the regular season nearing its final stretch, head coach Stephanie White offered a glimmer of hope that reignited fans’ optimism.
Clark has been sidelined since July 15, when she injured her right groin during a game against the Connecticut Sun. Since then, the star point guard has missed 13 games-adding to the five she missed earlier in the season due to a quadriceps injury. Her absence has weighed heavily on the Fever’s performance.
August hasn’t been kind to Indiana, with the team posting a 3-4 record, including back-to-back losses to the Washington Mystics and the Dallas Wings-two of the league’s lowest-ranked teams. While there’s still no official timeline for Clark’s return, signs of progress are beginning to emerge.
Coach White offers a ray of hope
During a press conference ahead of Sunday’s matchup against the Sun, Coach White addressed Clark’s status once again. When asked whether the second-year guard might return before the playoffs, she responded simply: “That’s the hope.”
Her comment aligns with the team’s consistent messaging: no set return date, but optimism that Clark will be back before the regular season wraps.
Clark opens up about her recovery
Despite staying positive, the Fever star hasn’t sugarcoated the emotional toll of her injury. “It’s been so challenging-being active, playing four games, and then not,” she shared last week on Sue Bird’s Bird’s Eye View podcast.
Clark admitted that some days are tougher than others, but she’s encouraged by her progress and remains determined to return to the court. Meanwhile, her teammates are doing their best to hold the line, hoping brighter days are ahead.
