The NFL landscape hasn’t changed dramatically since Jon Gruden last coached in 2021. By then, Patrick Mahomes had already hoisted a Lombardi Trophy, Lamar Jackson had earned MVP honors, and Josh Allen had made his first Pro Bowl. Yet, when asked to name the best quarterback in the league today, Gruden chose someone else entirely.
Gruden is no rookie when it comes to football. Over his 27-year career, he’s held nearly every coaching position imaginable. His most recent stint was with the Raiders from 2018 to 2021, and in 2023, he served as a consultant for the New Orleans Saints-adding even more credibility to his résumé.
Since retiring, the Super Bowl XXXVII champion with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers has become a regular voice on Barstool Sports, where he shares bold takes on both the NFL and college football. It was there that he named Joe Burrow as the top quarterback in the game today.
Gruden’s Pick: A snub heard ’round the Internet
In a recent interview with Peighton Tubre, Gruden played a round of rapid-fire questions. When asked who he believes is the best quarterback right now, he didn’t hesitate: “Joe Burrow.”
The Cincinnati Bengals star posted elite stats in the 2023 season-leading the league in completion rate, ranking second in overall accuracy, and third in touchdowns. He completed 460 of 652 pass attempts for 4,918 yards, 43 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions.
Still, critics were quick to point out that Burrow has yet to win a Super Bowl or earn MVP honors. Despite his impressive numbers, the Bengals didn’t make it to the playoffs. And fans weren’t shy about voicing their disapproval.
Social media meltdown
“He lost me at Joe Burrow,” said one disappointed fan on TikTok. “As soon as he said Burrow I knew he was rage baiting,” said another, followed by another who stated, “Joe Burrow isn’t even the best in his division,” sentiment one more echoed by saying, “Burrow genuinely the third best QB in the AFC North.”
With the 2025 NFL season just weeks away, all eyes will be on Burrow to see if he can live up to Gruden’s praise-or if fans will use the former coach’s bold claim as fuel for more online fire.

A hollow vote of confidence caps Bill Belichick’s most absurd week yet at UNC (and it’s only Wednesday)
North Carolina touted Bill Belichick's hire as proof it was finally serious about football. But about 11 months in -- with a string of fiascos on and off the field -- it looks more like a basketball school playing dress-up as a football power, and doing a poor job of it. Carolina athletics released terse statements from Belichick and athletic director Bubba Cunningham Wednesday night following a long day of closed-door meetings in Chapel Hill as Belichick's tenure reached its nadir. "I'm fully committed to UNC football and the program we're building here," Belichick said. "Coach Belichick has the full support of the department of athletics and the university," Cunningham added. This will do nothing to quell the schadenfreude the industry has towards the sideshow in Chapel Hill, and make no mistake, the college football world is watching and laughing; whether it's opposing coaches, their […]
