According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Mets are looking for defense and versatility, and Cody Bellinger of the Yankees has them, plus he is above average at four positions.
When the Mets stole Juan Soto from the Yankees last offseason, they learned a lesson. It is the importance of having a stellar defensive center fielder alongside him. Throughout the season, center field has been a big problem for the Mets.
This led the Mets to instead bring in Cedric Mullins from the Baltimore Orioles at the July 31, 2025 trade deadline. In addition, the Mets could lose Pete Alonso in the offseason, and Cody Bellinger can also play first base.
