Sophie Cunningham has endured one of the most difficult weeks of her professional career as she picks up a fine for her comments relating to Paige Bueckers, whilst also suffering a serious injury.
The Indiana Fever star now joins Caitlin Clark on the sidelines and also confirms she has been fined once again by the WNBA-this time over remarks about the referees and the Dallas Wings‘ rookie.
“I love Paige to death, do not get me wrong, I think she’s a hell of a player,” Cunningham said previously. “And like I would love to play with her one day – but those refs were giving her every freaking whistle last night [Aug 13].
“Like, you literally couldn’t touch her, and that [expletive] is so annoying to me. And if you’re going to do that, give it to our guards.
“We know she’s a good rookie and she’s going to get some whistles, but like to get the treatment she got last night, was crazy.”
That marks her third fine for the month of August as she questioned a perceived double standard in decision-making, believing Bueckers was getting away with decisions that other players may not manage to.
“I’m officially 3 for 3 on being fined by the WNBA,” Cunningham said on her Show Me Something podcast. “They didn’t like my comments on Paige Bueckers.
“I didn’t even say anything bad. It’s insane.”
The league has previously penalized Cunningham for her outspoken views on officiating. She was fined $500 for posting a TikTok mocking referees and later $1500 for criticizing inconsistency in foul calls.
Sophie Cunningham injury: How long is Indiana Fever guard out for?
Cunningham sustained an MCL injury during the Fever’s 99-93 overtime victory against the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, August 17 during the second-quarter when Bria Hartley made contact with the 28-year-old’s right leg while driving through the paint.
Cunningham immediately fell to the floor clutching her knee, screaming in visible pain before being helped off the court by medical staff before later evaluations revealed an MCL tear, ruling her out for the rest of the campaign.
This blow compounded a growing list of injury problems for Indiana, who were already without Clark as well as guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson, both out with season-ending setbacks.
To fill their newly-injured guard’s roster spot, the team signed veteran Shey Peddy to a seven-day hardship contract, while releasing the rookie, Kyra Lambert, as Stephanie White goes back to the drawing board with the WNBA Playoffs on the horizon.
Cunningham’s career trajectory has been defined by resilience and outspoken competitiveness. After six seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, she joined the Fever this year and averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in 30 games.
