Aber er hat viele Spiele auf dem Buckel (stand mit Monaco im Euroleague-Endspiel, d. Red.), er weiß natürlich auch, wie er da hinkommt.“

Mumbrú erlaubt erneut Phasen, in denen weder Kapitän Dennis Schröder noch Franz Wagner auf dem Parkett stehen. Da hatte bereits beim Supercup in München für Diskussionen gesorgt.
Drei Minuten vor Schluss kommen die Hausherren auf zwei heran. Schröder antwortet per Dreier, doch danach fällt nichts mehr auf deutscher Seite, Spanien schafft tatsächlich noch den Ausgleich und erzwingt die Verlängerung (94:94).

Gleiches machen die Spanier, doch das letzte Wort hat wieder Kapitän Schröder (mit 24 Punkten bester Werfer der Partie), der übers Brett zum hauchdünnen Sieg trifft, weil die Spanier ihren letzten Wurf verlegen. Am Sieg hat auch Isaac Bonga mit satten elf Rebounds großen Anteil.
Damit bricht die DBB-Auswahl ihren Spanien-Fluch, siegt erstmals seit 20 Jahren wieder gegen die Iberer. Seit 2005 hatte es acht Pleiten bei EM (5), WM (1), Olympia (1) und in einem Freundschaftsspiel (1) gegeben.

Die Europameisterschaft beginnt für das deutsche Team am Mittwoch (27. August) in Tampere (Finnland) gegen Montenegro. Weitere Gegner: Litauen, Schweden, Großbritannien und die Mit-Gastgeber Finnland.
Vorher muss Mumbrú noch drei Spieler aus seinem 15er-Kader streichen. Gegen Spanien ließ er Leon Kratzer, Justus Hollatz und Nelson Weidemann komplett auf der Bank.
