During this offseason, the San Francisco 49ers extended their quarterback, sparking mixed reactions among fans and analysts. Brock Purdy signed a 5-year, $265 million contract, with $181 million guaranteed, turning “Mr. Irrelevant” of 2022 into one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in NFL history.

It’s worth remembering that Purdy led the 49ers to the 2023 Super Bowl, where they fell to Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs in overtime. That same season, Christian McCaffrey also had a spectacular year. The 49ers couldn’t replicate that success in 2024, but they’re aiming for a comeback in 2025.
Despite all this, 49ers fans haven’t forgotten the quarterback they originally chose in 2021 to lead the franchise: Trey Lance, for whom they traded three first-round picks. For one reason or another, it simply didn’t work out.
Trey Lance returns to Levi’s Stadium
It will be interesting to see how 49ers fans react when Trey Lance returns to Levi’s Stadium after a couple of years, following the team’s decision to move on from him and send him to the Dallas Cowboys. Now, Lance comes back as a member of the Los Angeles Chargers, looking revitalized and performing at a high level.
In three preseason games, Trey Lance has thrown for 296 yards, two touchdowns, and also scored a rushing touchdown. He is now competing to become Justin Herbert’s backup for the Chargers, and his first start on Saturday against his former team will be the ultimate test.
During his time with the 49ers, Lance was very young and expectations were high. Unfortunately, three serious injuries and an apparent lack of support from veterans in the locker room turned his tenure in San Francisco into a nightmare. Now, he seems to be back on the NFL map.
He is currently competing directly with Taylor Heinicke for the backup role, and there are reasons to believe he could win it. Even if he doesn’t, it’s likely that another NFL team will show interest in the quarterback’s services.
