The preseason has officially wrapped up, and NFL teams are now focused on fine-tuning their rosters ahead of the 2025 regular season kickoff. For some franchises, the final days brought bold and unexpected decisions-none more surprising than the Philadelphia Eagles’ latest move.
The Eagles wasted no time addressing their quarterback depth chart, acquiring Sam Howell from the Minnesota Vikings. In exchange, Minnesota will welcome veteran Carson Wentz, who is set to serve as a steady presence behind rookie quarterback JJ McCarthy.

The trade from Minnesota to Philadelphia
The Eagles sent a 2026 fifth-round pick, a 2026 sixth-round pick, and a 2027 seventh-round selection to Minnesota to secure Howell’s services. It was a notable investment for a young quarterback who, despite flashes of potential, has already been part of multiple transactions in his brief career.
Howell, originally drafted in 2022, is approaching the end of his rookie contract. He spent his first two seasons with the Washington Commanders, where he played all 17 games in 2023. That year, he led the league in pass attempts (612), but also topped the charts in interceptions (21) and sacks taken (65). His heavy workload highlighted both promise and vulnerability.
In 2024, Howell was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, where he saw limited action in just two games. By April of this year, he found himself with the Vikings, though his stint in Minnesota barely lasted through the summer. Now, he heads back to the East Coast, joining an Eagles team determined to strengthen its quarterback room.
Carson Wentz heads to Minnesota
For Carson Wentz, this move represents another chapter in a career defined by both promise and setbacks. Drafted second overall in 2016 by Philadelphia, Wentz was once viewed as the franchise’s cornerstone. However, a devastating injury derailed his trajectory, and since then he has struggled to find stability.
Last season, Wentz served as Patrick Mahomes’ backup with the Kansas City Chiefs. He earned a rare opportunity in the regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, completing 12 of 19 passes for 118 yards to help secure the AFC’s top seed.
Despite moments of competence, Wentz has never fully regained the form that once made him an MVP candidate. His NFL journey has taken him through Philadelphia, Indianapolis, Washington, Los Angeles, Kansas City, and now Minnesota. Each stop has ended without long-term success, but with McCarthy leading the Vikings’ offense, Wentz could become an invaluable insurance policy. If the rookie falters, Minnesota will turn to a seasoned veteran who still carries the experience of high-pressure moments.
Final preparations before kickoff
With less than two weeks until the 2025 NFL season begins, front offices are finalizing their rosters, and coaching staffs are adjusting strategies. For the Eagles, Howell’s arrival signals a commitment to grooming young talent behind Jalen Hurts. For the Vikings, the addition of Wentz provides depth and security behind McCarthy.
