
Una audiencia judicial forense celebrada este lunes en Gales confirmó la apertura de una investigación para determinar las causas de la muerte del exentrenador del Liverpool femenino, Matt Beard, acaecida el 20 de septiembre.
Beard fue hallado ahorcado en su domicilio de Flintshire (Gales), y posteriormente trasladado con un “devastador daño cerebral” al hospital de Chester (noroeste de Inglaterra), donde falleció a los 47 años, según reveló el forense John Griffiths al tribunal.
La audiencia judicial indicó que, tras su ingreso hospitalario, la familia acordó desconectar el soporte vital que mantenía con vida a Beard. El inglés dirigió al Liverpool femenino en dos etapas logrando los títulos consecutivos de la Women’s Super League en 2013 y 2014, y regresó al club en 2021 pero fue destituido en febrero de este año.
Su último cargo fue en el Burnley femenino, del que dimitió en junio tras apenas dos meses al frente. Durante su carrera, entrenó a equipos como Millwall, Chelsea, West Ham y Bristol City, y en la NWSL estadounidense a los Boston Breakers.
Antes de todos los partidos de la WSL y WSL2 del domingo 21 de septiembre se guardó un minuto de silencio y el encuentro del Liverpool ante el Aston Villa fue aplazado.

La familia ha solicitado que los homenajes se canalicen mediante donaciones a organizaciones de salud mental, mientras que la periodista Jacqui Oatley ha organizado una recaudación para apoyar a su familia que ha superado las 50.000 libras (más de 57.000 euros), en reconocimiento a su legado y contribución al fútbol femenino.
En este sentido, el hijo de Beard, Harry, publicó posteriormente mensajes en redes sociales para recordar a su padre y animar a la gente a hablar sobre los problemas de salud mental: “El suicidio nunca es la respuesta”, escribió.
