There’s an epidemic happening around the NFL, which for many casual watchers has gone unnoticed. It hasn’t just been a problem in 2025, either, as it has plagued several teams over the past half-decade or so. It has become apparent quickly this year, though, that offensive line struggles are a massive issue in the NFL.
That was extremely visible during Monday Night Football in Week 4. The New York Jets and Cincinnati Bengals were the main culprits. Justin Fields was sacked twice and under frequent pressure from what is generally considered a bad Miami Dolphins defense. In the later game, Jake Browning was subject to a porous offensive line that led to Joe Burrow getting injured a couple of weeks ago. Granted, it was against a fierce Denver Broncos pass rush, but it highlighted just how bad offensive line play has been for many teams this year.

Is a lack of training camp reps leading to bad offensive line play around the NFL?
While watching both games, it had fans, analysts and former players worried for the future of certain offenses. Poor offensive line play doesn’t allow passing or running games to function properly. One of Andy Reid‘s former Kansas City Chiefs players, Geoff Schwartz, thinks he knows one reason why we have seen such poor offensive line play this year: the lack of reps in training camp.
Schwartz played under Reid during the head coach’s first season in Kansas City. Practices during training camp and the regular season have changed dramatically since then. The NFL has placed an emphasis on player safety, leading to less physical contact in practices, as well as fewer practices overall.
The lack of reps is clearly an issue, especially because offensive lines need to work in unison in order to function properly. Without as many live reps as before, it’s tougher for chemistry to be built among five separate players on the line. And that’s not even taking into account the amount of injuries that have occurred this season.
