Pat McAfee, former NFL punter and host of ESPN’s College GameDay, is creating controversy on the program’s popular kicking contest after announcing some changes due to the confirmation of a run of expensive costs.
According to EssentiallySports, McAfee lost an estimated $850,000 in five weeks as students made field goals on live broadcasts.

A high-stakes contest
The tradition of the contest is to invite college students to try a 33-yard field goal with the promise of getting a large amount of money as a prize. It is a fan favorite attraction, combining thrill, talent, and enjoyment with the promise of a big reward if succeed.
The recent episodes, though, exposed gaps in the competition format. A freshman Penn State student was once declared the winner after the first winner rejected the prize. The win came with a $300,000 reward that McAfee doubled after he found out about the deal. The incident exposed a loophole under which competitors could take advantage of the system by choosing an individual with real kicking ability.
