Three days after making his return from a two-game injury absence, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been ruled out for the team’s Thursday night game against the Los Angeles Rams because of the same injury. Backup Mac Jones will make his third start of the season in Purdy’s place.
Purdy missed Weeks 2 and 3 with a toe injury before playing all of Sunday’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was sore after Sunday’s game and was unable to practice Tuesday, the Niners’ only session before Thursday’s game.

Speaking Tuesday, Purdy said he was not yet ready to play but added, “I have two days.” He said the soreness in his toe was “nowhere near as bad” as it was after the season-opening win at Seattle, when he suffered the injury.
Jones aggravated a preseason knee injury in the Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals and was limited in practice last week, but he was able to serve as Purdy’s backup against Jacksonville. He was a full participant in practice this week and does not have an injury designation for the game against the Rams, although he said he will wear a knee brace moving forward.
Also out for the 49ers on Thursday night will be wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee), Jauan Jennings (ankle, ribs) and Jordan Watkins (calf).

Pearsall injured his knee on Sunday against the Jaguars, while Jennings was already battling shoulder and ankle injuries before taking a shot to the ribs Sunday. Watkins, a fourth-round rookie who impressed in training camp and the preseason, has yet to play this season due to a calf injury. None of the three practiced this week.
Pearsall ranks fourth in the NFL with 327 receiving yards, and he’s averaging 16.4 yards per reception. Jennings has nine catches for 129 yards and a touchdown in three games, having missed Week 3’s game against Arizona.
The 49ers and Rams both enter Thursday’s game at 3-1, meaning the winner will take the NFC West lead ahead of the 3-1 Seahawks and 2-2 Cardinals, at least until Seattle hosts Tampa Bay on Sunday.
What this means for Purdy
Purdy isn’t healthy enough to be the team’s emergency backup in Los Angeles, which underscores that his sprained big toe was worse than it seemed coming out of Sunday’s loss to the Jaguars and that the 49ers are leery of it becoming a recurring issue this season. They are entering a rough stretch of their schedule, especially for someone dealing with a sore toe.

Thursday’s game will be played on an artificial surface, followed by a road game in Tampa (grass), a home game against the Atlanta Falcons (grass), a road game in Houston (artificial) and a road game against the Giants at MetLife Stadium, where the artificial surface has drawn criticism — especially from the 49ers — since 2020.
The Niners will likely either elevate (one-game only) or promote quarterback Adrian Martinez from the practice squad on Thursday. If they elevate him, it will be the third and final time they can do so this season without signing him to the active roster.
What to expect from Jones
Jones played well in his previous two starts — both 49ers wins — and arguably has better cohesion with the pass catchers who will be available in Thursday’s game. That’s because so many of them are backups who practiced alongside Jones and the second-team offense throughout the summer. That includes tight end Jake Tonges and receiver Demarcus Robinson, who will likely get his first start with the 49ers after being activated from the reserve/suspended list last week.
Jones has also played 40 games with former New England Patriots teammate Kendrick Bourne, who also figures to start. Bourne and Purdy had a hard time connecting in Sunday’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, with Bourne dropping three passes.
