Tyreek Hill underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair a dislocated left knee and multiple torn ligaments, including his ACL, after being injured against the New York Jets.
His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that the procedure “went very well according to his doctors,” and confirmed that Hill is targeting a return for the start of the 2026/27 NFL season.
Tyreek Hill’s emotional message to fans after injury
Rosenhaus emphasized that recovery and rehabilitation are now the focus, with no plans to rush him back this campaign as the Dolphins sit 1-3 in the AFC East.
“It’s about rehab, and he will play next season,” Rosenhaus said. “The realistic goal is the start of the season.” In an interview with WSVN-TV in Miami, he added, “There is no nerve damage, no blood flow issues, no broken bones, the [knee] cartilage is fine.”
Hill’s injury came during the Dolphins’ 27-21 win over the Jets, a costly result despite the victory as his head coach described the challenge of losing a star player.
“It’s a challenge that it doesn’t matter how difficult it is,” Mike McDaniel said. “No one [outside the building] really cares.
“You have to find a way to get yourself to continue to get better, like all teams, for you to stay in the win column.”
Since joining the Dolphins in 2022, only Justin Jefferson has more receiving yards than Hill, underscoring his importance to Miami’s offense.
His absence will force the team to adapt. In previous games without him, Jaylen Waddle has stepped up, including an eight-catch, 142-yard, one-touchdown performance in a 30-0 win over the Jets in 2023.
Veteran tight end Darren Waller may also take on a larger role after scoring two touchdowns in his season debut on September 29. Running back De’Von Achane, who leads his position in receiving yards and catches, is also expected to remain a key contributor.
To add depth, the team signed Cedrick Wilson Jr. from the New Orleans Saints practice squad. Wilson, who played for Miami in 2022 and 2023, totaled 432 yards and three touchdowns on 34 catches and offers familiarity with the offense.
How did Tyreek Hill get injured?
The injury occurred early in the third quarter when Hill caught a 10-yard pass from quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. As he was tackled out of bounds, his left leg twisted underneath him, causing a dislocation and multiple ligament tears, including the ACL.
An air cast was immediately applied, and he was taken to hospital. Despite the severity, Hill waved and smiled to fans as he was carted off.
“He was probably in the best spirits of any player that I’ve ever seen [have] such a terrible experience,” said McDaniel. “He immediately had wide eyes and was talking, ‘I’m good, just make sure the guys get this win.’ He was focused on the team.”
Hill entered Monday’s game as the Dolphins’ leading receiver with 198 yards this season and had recorded 67 yards on six catches before the injury. Over four seasons in Miami, he has missed only one game, highlighting his durability and value.
With Hill sidelined, Waddle now becomes Miami’s top receiver, with second-year wideout Malik Washington expected to step into the No. 2 role. Additional support will likely come from Waller and Achane as the team reshapes its offense heading into Week 5.
The Dolphins’ ability to adapt will be critical, but Hill’s successful surgery and clean medical outcome provide optimism he will return at full strength for the start of next season.
