This season, Josh Allen has once again started on an MVP trajectory. The Buffalo Bills quarterback faced questions last season after being awarded the MVP-not because his season wasn’t excellent, but because Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens had far better stats. Nevertheless, the award went to the Bills star.
Allen never commented on those criticisms, but what he has done is demonstrate in 2025 that he is currently the best quarterback in the NFL. In fact, he is the clear favorite in the betting odds to win MVP again, with odds of +110. It’s only the first quarter of the season, but Allen has the Bills at 4-0, with 7 touchdown passes and just one interception.
This Sunday, the Bills will play their third divisional game of the year against the New England Patriots in prime time. The Patriots enter with a 2-2 record and in the second year of Drake Maye, who showed flashes of being the future of the team during his rookie season.
The tricky comparisons between Josh Allen and Drake Maye
There’s no doubt that comparisons can be tricky and even unfair-especially when you’re being compared to Josh Allen, the current NFL MVP. That’s exactly what Drake Maye is experiencing. While he has shown his talent in the league, comparing him to Allen is far more challenging than it seems.
Allen is 6’5″ and 240 lbs; Maye is 6’4″ and 225 lbs. Physically they are very similar, but the reality is that Drake Maye only has five NFL wins in his career. Beyond these comparisons, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is not convinced.
“I don’t necessarily agree with that,” Vrabel said this week. “I think we want Drake to play quarterback, and that means working through progressions and executing the play scheme. I’ve never told him not to run, just to protect himself and the ball. So I don’t necessarily agree with that comparison. With Josh Allen, I think he plays in the way he feels gives him the best chance to win and lead his team to victory each week, which has been very successful.”
So far, Drake Maye has 7 touchdown passes, 2 rushing touchdowns, and only 2 interceptions. The North Carolina product has started well enough to be compared with the current NFL MVP-but there’s still a long way to go.
