As Texas enters the heart of SEC play, head coach Steve Sarkisian has made his intentions crystal clear: he expects Arch Manning to focus inward, to shed external pressure, and to reclaim consistency as his baseline.
Amid swirling expectations and a few rocky performances early in the season, Sarkisian‘s message has become less about what Arch can’t do and more about who he is – and who he must continue to become.
Sarkisian has repeatedly urged Manning not to chase narrative or hype, but to return to the fundamentals he knows best. “He just has to focus on his teammates, focus on what he needs to do to prepare, focus on having some fun, playing football,” the coach said.
When Manning trusts that process, Sarkisian believes, his best football emerges.
The journey hasn’t been smooth. Through four games, Manning has shown flashes – 888 passing yards, 9 touchdowns, a completion rate near 61.3 % – but also self-inflicted flaws and inconsistency. His critics have been loud.
But Sarkisian insists the solution isn’t a wholesale reinvention; it’s about stopping the spin, quieting the noise, and letting his quarterback stabilize.
Pacesetters demand poise and progress
Sarkisian’s strategy isn’t a soft approach – it’s firm guardrails. He’s not demanding perfection, but a reset: fewer emotional swings, sharper reads, steadier mechanics. He’s telling Arch to lean on his identity, not perform into the narrative that surrounds him.
That pressure is real. Expectations around Manning have been “out of control,” as Sarkisian once acknowledged.
Losses like the season opener at Ohio State stung – Manning took responsibility – but his coach was quick to encourage patience.
Sarkisian’s admonition is layered: be yourself, yes – but don’t make the same mistakes twice. For a quarterback with a storied lineage, the demand is both empowering and heavy.
He’s not just coaching Arch Manning. He’s coaching the version of himself he expects Arch to become.
