Former NFL defensive end and ESPN analyst Marcus Spears believes Russell Wilson’s career has reached its final chapter.
In a candid exchange with TMZ Sports this week in New York City, Spears said the 35-year-old quarterback should hang up his cleats following his recent benching by the New York Giants.
Jaxson Dart wins NVP and a slime shower
When asked if Wilson should consider retirement, Spears didn’t hesitate. “Yeah, Russell gotta go!” he said.
He bluntly expressed what many around the league have started to think – that the former Super Bowl champion no longer has the same spark that once defined his game.
Wilson’s first season in New York has been nothing short of turbulent. After joining the Giants in March, he led the team to an 0-3 start, prompting head coach Brian Daboll to make a change and promote rookie Jaxson Dart to the starting role.
Spears says it’s time for Wilson to walk away
Spears, who spent nearly a decade in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, made it clear he believes Wilson’s time as a starting quarterback has run its course.
“Russell gotta go,” he repeated when asked about the quarterback’s future.
Wilson, however, isn’t ready to accept that narrative.
Following his benching, he pushed back against retirement speculation, saying he still has the drive and ability to compete at a high level.
“For me personally, I’m not done. I’ve got so much belief in myself and I know what I’m capable of. I know I can help this football team if that comes up,” Wilson said, standing firm in his belief that he can still make an impact for the Giants.
The veteran quarterback’s confidence remains unchanged despite a challenging stretch that has included three disappointing seasons with the Broncos and Steelers prior to his arrival in New York.
Once known for his pinpoint accuracy and late-game heroics, Wilson has struggled to find rhythm behind an inconsistent offensive line and under a new system that hasn’t played to his strengths.
Rookie Jaxson Dart seizes his opportunity
While Wilson vows to keep fighting, Spears is putting his faith in the Giants’ new quarterback. He spoke highly of rookie Jaxson Dart, who replaced Wilson in Week 4 and led the Giants to their first victory of the season.
“Dart’s going to be good,” Spears said, praising the young signal-caller’s poise and athleticism.
Dart’s debut gave the team a much-needed spark, reigniting optimism among fans after a slow start to the season.
The Giants will look to build on that success when they face the New Orleans Saints this Sunday at the Superdome.
A win would not only validate Daboll’s decision to switch quarterbacks but could also signal a changing of the guard in New York’s locker room.
