The Cleveland Browns continue to make headlines – unfortunately, not for positive reasons. Once again, they’re showing why they’ve been one of the NFL’s most dysfunctional franchises. Since returning to Cleveland in 1999, they’ve made the playoffs only four times.
Shedeur Sanders loses a friend in Cleveland as Joe Flacco gets traded to rival
This time, the situation involves a trade: Joe Flacco was sent to the Cincinnati Bengals – yes, an intra-divisional trade within the AFC North. The deal between the Browns and Bengals for the 18-year veteran quarterback involves Cincinnati sending a 2026 fifth-round draft pick to Cleveland in exchange for Flacco and a sixth-round pick in the same year. This move comes as the Bengals deal with quarterback issues following Joe Burrow’s injury. If all goes well, Burrow is expected to return by mid-December.
Joe Flacco won the starting job for the Browns during the preseason and started four games. However, he struggled – throwing six interceptions over that stretch. Eventually, he lost the starting role to rookie Dillon Gabriel, who made his first start in Week 5 when the Browns fell to the Minnesota Vikings in London.
Shedeur Sanders must be Dillon Gabriel’s backup
The Browns’ quarterback situation has drawn attention mainly because of Shedeur Sanders, who was projected to be a first-round pick in last year’s draft but surprisingly fell to the fifth round, where Cleveland finally selected him.
Throughout the season, Shedeur Sanders has been the Browns’ last option – their third-string, emergency quarterback. But now, with Joe Flacco’s departure, fans and analysts are calling for head coach Kevin Stefanski to give Sanders a real opportunity as the team’s No. 2 quarterback.
On Baskin & Phelps (92.3 The Fan), the hosts stated: “They’ve got to move Shedeur Sanders up, right? If you drafted him, you might as well make him the No. 2 QB.”
It’s worth remembering that when Shedeur Sanders started during the preseason – in that game against the Carolina Panthers – he played very well, throwing two touchdown passes and leading the team to victory. Now, it seems that the opportunity for Deion Sanders’ son might arrive sooner rather than later.
